4 20 June 2008E906 Collaboration Meeting4 Station 1: New MWPCs Located just after Magnet+Beam Dump+Hadron Absorber  High rates (up to 100 MHz)  Used for tracking back to target to eliminate tracks from dump/abs  Combined with Station 2 space points gives momentum determination 6 planes (Y,Y’,U,U’,V,V’) of MWPC just after Station 1 Hodoscope 124 cm x 166 cm size, 2 mm wire spacing, stereo angle TBD CF 4 /Isobutane (80:20) gas 3 RF bucket time resolution Readout using new preamp/disc/readout electronics from IPAS  Approx 4500 channels needed  Data out into FPGA system (IPAS) Station 1 Gas System: CF 4 /Isobutane (80:20)  Use Hermes RICH recirculating gas system (property of ANL)  FNAL will plumb/integrate with flammable gas safety system

5 20 June 2008E906 Collaboration Meeting5 Status and Plans Status and Plans - I Chamber designer: At present, working with FNA/ANL- HEP; also could use Colorado staff scientist Eric Erdos after Aug 15. After magnet redesign, MWPCs are being redesigned as well for optimized acceptance, resolution and rate capabilities. MWPCs of these dimensions are not as easy as small chambers. Will need optimization of wire diameter (tension) with HV and readout electronics.

6 20 June 2008E906 Collaboration Meeting6 Status and Plans Chamber construction:  Original plan to move winding machine to Colorado and use (free) Colorado staff (Eric) to build chamber. (Eric worked at FNAL originally on wire chamber construction, knows FNAL Karen Kephart)  If FNAL techs are available and affordable, could be built at FNAL, however, Erdos cannot move to FNAL to oversee construction. New Colorado postdoc (if funded) could be stationed at FNAL.

8 20 June 2008E906 Collaboration Meeting8 Open questions Some Open Questions Should we build a small prototype for testing new front end electronics? Should we build spare layers of each wire orientation? What is desired spacing of layers? How completely should “dead” region behind beam dump be dead? E.g., would two “half-size” chambers be better given difficulties of MWPCs with 2mm wire spacing of over 1 meter in wire length?
