GEOGRAPHY AND LIFE IN ARABIA For thousands of years, traders have crossed Arabia on routes between Europe, Asia, and Africa. Travel through Arabia was not easy. Travelers had to cross wide deserts with scorching temperatures and little water.

THE ARABIAN PENINSULA Look at the map on page 55 in the text. What bodies of water surround Arabia? Why do you think Arabia is called a “crossroads”?

CROSSROADS LOCATION The intersection of which three continents lies near the Arabian Peninisula?

CHECK ME OUT!!! My eyelashes and bushy eyebrows protect my eyes in sand storms. My nostrils close so I don’t breathe in sand AND moisture doesn’t escape.

MY FEET!!! What happened to my toes? My feet spread so that I stay on top of the sand…I don’t sink. Have you ever tried to run in the sand?

MY HUMP My hump does NOT store water. It stores fat. Fat gives you energy.

CAMELS ARE PACK ANIMALS I can carry up to 990 pounds, but I prefer about 350 pounds.

I may not look like a race horse, but I can reach speeds of 40 miles per hour.

RAISE YOUR HAND IF YOU KNOW WHY WOULD YOU NEED A CAMEL ON THE ARABIAN PENINSULA?

SAND DUNES! THEY ARE HILLS OF SAND SHAPED BY WIND. THEY CAN REACH A HEIGHT OF 800 FEET!

IT IS SOOO HOT AND DRY, NOTHING GROWS THERE. A CAMEL CAN TOLERATE THE HEAT.

IF YOU’RE REALLY LUCKY, YOU’LL FIND AN OASIS… A WET, FERTILE AREA IN A DESERT.

WHAT IS A CARAVAN? No, not this… …but this!
