1 Presentation On Foreign Visit (13th Nov to 3rd Dec 2008) Department of Computer Science, Princeton University, N.J, USA. Invited By, Dr. Marc E. Fiuczynski Dept., of Computer Science Princeton University, N.J, USA. By, B. R. Chandavarkar Lect., Computer Engineering Dept.,NITK, Surathkal.

2 Acknowledgment I am very much thankful to the Director, H.O.D CSE Department, TEQIP Coordinator and Dean R&D,, of NITK, Surathkal, for the opportunity given to visit Princeton University, N.J, USA for 3 weeks. I am also thankful to Dr. Marc E. Fiuczynski for inviting me to the Princeton University, N.J, USA and allowed me to use the resources, and given opportunity to attend seminars, interact with Research Scholars.

3 Objective “To gain practical knowledge about Planet Lab, MyPLC, Planet Bridge, HashCash and interact with Research Faculty and Scholar”

4 PlanetLab PlanetLab is a global research network that supports the development of new network services. Since the beginning of 2003, more than 1,000 researchers at top academic institutions (IIIT Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and IIT Roorkee) and industrial research labs have used PlanetLab to develop new technologies for distributed storage, network mapping, peer-to-peer systems, distributed hash tables, and query processing. [3]

5 MyPLC MyPLC is a complete PlanetLab Central (PLC) installation used to run a PlanetLab network of nodes. The default installation consists of a web server, an XML-RPC API server, a boot server, and a database server: the core components of PLC. The installation may be customized through a graphical interface. All PLC services are started up and shut down through a single System V init script installed in the host system. [2]

6 PlanetBridge PlanetBridge is a PlanetLab project with two objectives: 1.To develop the technological blueprint for a managed wireless gateway (i.e., a wifi router on steroids) based upon the PlanetLab software stack that is: –easy to install and maintain as a basic wireless router –offers a better way to deploy 3rd party services closer to the edge of the network –remotely manageable and monitored at scale –based on open source software

7 2.To deploy in settings that mirror real world usage both in the developed world as well as developing regions as a: –replacement to the conventional wireless router used at home  Ideally having services that are equivalent to those offered on the FreeBox, Apple Timecapsule, or HP Media Vault.  internet gateway as part of a neighborhood or village (community wireless)  school or office gateway  Smart node as part of a municipal wifi deployment or sitting next to WiMax? basestation [2] 3. A PlanetBridge node will also be: –reasonable cost ranging approaching US$ 200.00 to US$ 300.00 for a machine with a reasonable CPU, 512MB RAM, and approx. 100GB disk. –capable of connecting to multiple wireless and mesh networks running multiple protocols. 8 8 HashCache A configurable cache storage engine designed to meet the needs of cache storage in the developing world. It uses 6 to 20 times less memory than current techniques while still providing comparable or better performance. Hash-Cache can be deployed in configurations not attainable with current approaches, such as having multiple terabytes of external storage cache attached to low-powered machines

9 Conclusions In this visit to Princeton University, N.J, USA, I got the opportunity to learn and setup about Planetlab, MyPLC, Planet Bridge and HascCache. I also got the opportunity to interact with Faculty, Research Scholar of Department of Computer Science, Princeton University, N.J, USA. Attended the Ph.D Seminars, Department meetings regarding PlanetLab, Planet Bridge.
