High Altitude Balloon Instrument Survival Package Joseph Burns, Tom Fox, Austin Isitor, Nick Schuyler

 Replacement for Temperature Satellite project in 2005  Grants from Ohio Space Grant Consortium and National Science Foundation  Idea is to build “package” that will carry electrical equipment to 100,000 ft, drop, freefall for 35-40,000 ft, then deploy parachute  Past problems include unsuccessful parachute deployment

 Because of the altitude involved, we are at the mercy of the elements at high altitude  Flight prediction software is extremely important to a successful launch  Ultimate goal of the team is to find a design that will significantly increase the likelihood of a successful launch and recovery  New parachute release mechanism  New ballute design  Eliminate parachute altogether?

Apply knowledge gained to a real life application Further the collective knowledge of the WSUHAB team Provide insight on designs in support of Martian atmospheric reentry vehicles Provide a reliable and safe method of deploying and retrieving instruments

 Brainstorming ideas for materials, fundamental designs, and manufacturing process  Design of entire unit in computer in SolidWorks  Fabrication of parts with Epilog Legend Mini 24 Laser Cutting Machine  Work with electrical engineering team to facilitate implementation of their design  Optimization of components  Deployment and retrieval of package

 If design tests successfully in launch, it will:  protect instruments  impact the ground at >35 mph  deform plastically to absorb energy  initially deploy parachute with no entanglement  eventually deploy inflatable ballute and keep it inflated throughout decent  If design tests unsuccessfully in launch, the team will:  analyze what went wrong  determine how it went wrong  correct design  relaunch with improvements  Suggest improvements for future designs
