5. Today we will work with.. zthe element LINE –What is line?

6. LINE is... zA mark with length and direction(-s); zLine is a continuous mark made on some surface by a moving point.

7. zMay be two-dimensional (as with pencil on paper) LINE

8. zMay be three-dimensional (as with wire) or

9. LINE zMay be implied (as the edge of a shape or form).

10. Some students are able to use line to draw well. They can look at something and draw it the way it looks. zWhere does this skill come from? zIs it a skill that one can learn?

11. The ability to look at something and REALLY SEE it is a skill that one can learn. zYou can learn the skill of drawing by practicing keen observation.

12. What do you see when you look at an object? zDo you see just what the object is... zor

13. zDo you notice - do you see - do you observe the many details that make up the object?

14. zTo be able to draw well, you must develop observation skills. zYou must practice not only seeing and observing, but also being able to make your hand do what your eyes are seeing.

15. Blind Contour Drawing Can Increase Observation Skills and thus increase drawing skills

16. What is blind contour drawing? zContour is an outline, a line drawing.

17. What does “Blind” in Blind Contour refer to? zIf we are practicing observing and really seeing, why is it called BLIND line or contour drawing?

18. We are “BLIND” to the paper. zOur seeing/observing is so acute that we observe only the object being drawn and not the paper on which we are drawing.

19. What is blind contour drawing?

20. BLIND CONTOUR DRAWING zis an unbroken line drawing of an object’s contours. zThe drawing is done by keeping the mind and eye on the object being drawing and not on the paper.

21. BLIND CONTOUR DRAWING zis an exercise that trains the hand to do what the eye is seeing.

22. Assignment: zUse eight different objects to practice observation skills.

23. STEP 1 ˚Select an object that has complex form and many details

24. STEP 2 zSelect a starting place and let your eyes slowly explore and follow the outlines of the object. Notice/see every detail along the way.

25. STEP 3 zAs your eyes travel slowly around and over the edges of the object, let your hand draw what your eyes are seeing. Don’t look at the paper, you will loose your concentration.

26. zObserve and draw four objects in pencil zand four objects in ink pen. zNo erasing and zNo peeking at the paper

27. Remember: zThe finished drawings of the objects will NOT look like the object. zThis is an EXERCISE to practice observation skills.

28. Grading: zComplexity - is the object too simple or is it complex? zContour - is the line continuous and unbroken? Did you look at the paper? zDetails - has your eye and hand drawn all the many details? Don’t make up what you don’t see.
