In mathematics we can locate a point more exactly by using a coordinate system
The coordinate system is formed by the intersection of two number lines that meet at their zero points
This point is called the origin

3. The Coordinate Plane The horizontal number line is called the x-axis

4. The Coordinate Plane The vertical number line is called the y-axis

5. The Coordinate Plane
The two axes separate the coordinate plane into four sections called quadrants
The quadrants are numbered numerically (starting in the upper-right) in a counter-clockwise formation using roman numerals

You can graph any point on the coordinate plane by using an ordered pair of numbers
The first number in the pair is called the x-coordinate
The second number is called the y-coordinate
The coordinates are your directions to find the point
