1 The Coordinate Plane

2 The Coordinate Plane In mathematics we can locate a point more exactly by using a coordinate system The coordinate system is formed by the intersection of two number lines that meet at their zero points This point is called the origin

3 The Coordinate Plane The horizontal number line is called the x-axis

4 The Coordinate Plane The vertical number line is called the y-axis

5 The Coordinate Plane The two axes separate the coordinate plane into four sections called quadrants The quadrants are numbered numerically (starting in the upper-right) in a counter-clockwise formation using roman numerals Quadrant II Quadrant I Quadrant III Quadrant IV

6 The Coordinate Plane ( 2, 3 )
You can graph any point on the coordinate plane by using an ordered pair of numbers The first number in the pair is called the x-coordinate The second number is called the y-coordinate The coordinates are your directions to find the point ( 2, 3 )

7 The Coordinate Plane Notice the points in Quadrant I. What do they all have in common? All of the x-coordinates have positive values and all of the y-coordinates have positive values ( +, + ) Quadrant II Quadrant I Quadrant III Quadrant IV

8 The Coordinate Plane Notice the points in Quadrant II. What do they all have in common? All of the x-coordinates have negative values and all of the y-coordinates have positive values ( +, + ) ( - , + ) Quadrant II Quadrant I Quadrant III Quadrant IV

9 The Coordinate Plane Notice the points in Quadrant III. What do they all have in common? All of the x-coordinates have negative values and all of the y-coordinates have negative values ( +, + ) ( - , + ) Quadrant II Quadrant I ( - , - ) Quadrant III Quadrant IV

10 The Coordinate Plane Notice the points in Quadrant IV. What do they all have in common? All of the x-coordinates have positive values and all of the y-coordinates have negative values ( +, + ) ( - , + ) Quadrant II Quadrant I ( +, - ) ( - , - ) Quadrant III Quadrant IV

11 Graphing Points on The Coordinate Plane Checkpoint
Tell which quadrant the ordered pair below would be located in, then come up and graph the point ( -5, -2 ) Quadrant III

12 Graphing Points on The Coordinate Plane Checkpoint
Tell which quadrant the ordered pair below would be located in, then come up and graph the point ( 2, -3 ) Quadrant IV

13 Graphing Points on The Coordinate Plane Checkpoint
Tell which quadrant the ordered pair below would be located in, then come up and graph the point ( -4, 3 ) Quadrant II

14 Graphing Points on The Coordinate Plane Checkpoint
Tell which quadrant the ordered pair below would be located in, then come up and graph the point ( 3, 3 ) Quadrant I
