1 NDIA SE Division – Annual Planning Meeting December 12-13, 2012 1 Agenda Draft Paper from Mission Analysis Subcommittee Observations from SE Conference Steve Henry Request Q about transforming logical data models to physical data models

2 NDIA SE Division – Annual Planning Meeting December 12-13, 2012 2 SE Conference Observations Themes included “complex systems” and “getting integration right” Benefits of using “reference” architectures (reuse) During services panel, Dr. Michael Ryschkewitsch from NASA was the only one to mention MBSE. Several of the services leaders, plus Mr. Alan Shaffer, mentioned the InterAgency Working Group for Complex Design. Several topics being addressed by this working group include a proactive risk-based process to address complexity, and ways to optimize architecture development to include fault management. Very little mention of DoDAF (Holly-Human Views, Matt H-Capability based views) Phil Zimmermann in OSD (works for K Baldwin) follow-ups about MBSE with DoD CIO Engineered Resiliant Systems renamed to Applied M&S for Resiliant Systems? Emphasis on modeling in lieu of documentation.

3 NDIA SE Division – Annual Planning Meeting December 12-13, 2012 3 Steve Henry Request EMAIL FROM STEVE: I am at the Defense New OA Summit. I met Dr Paul Flietz from AFRL. He is on one of the panels. He is the ISR Application Lead, Materials and Maufacturing... They have several programs on OA. MENSA and MOSA Back end SIREN They are looking for Affordable Open System Arch for ISR. I suggested they talk to the NDIA Arch committee. You might be able to get a recruit. He is new to OA. He is also looking at OA to improve ISR diagnostics. Might be ATS or EHM interest. He did not have a card but he said he would email me. I will pass along info

4 NDIA SE Division – Annual Planning Meeting December 12-13, 2012 4 Q about Logical to Physical Models From a colleague: “A key capability that is missing throughout industry is the ability to transform a logical data model (with classes, attributes, instances, and associations) into a physical data model (with classes being tables, class attributes being columns in the tables, instances being rows in the tables, and associations being primary/foreign key linkages between tables). For a defense industry perspective, I recently asked the 1,000 members of the DODAF development working group for any success stories of transforming a logical data model developed using the DODAF required logical data metamodel into physical data models using the DODAF required physical data metamodel and got zero examples of success and a lot of pent up frustration about why I probably wouldn’t get any examples. An incredible amount of effort is currently being spent on developing logical data models for defense & security related systems, but without being able to transform them into physical data models the information embedded in them isn’t consumable.” Comments?
