What hardware (modification) is needed? 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review3

What hardware (modification) is needed? KFA 53 is a complete new kicker system: Vacuum tank Delay line magnet Pulsed/Controls Cables Generators (PFL) Controls Infrastructure (building, cable ducts, electrical installation, etc.) 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review4

Received Requirements As fast as KFA-45 (rise time 46 ns 1-99%). Max. deflection angle at 2 GeV: 1.3 mrad. Beam stay clear aperture: 140x53 mm. Magnet to be placed in SD53. 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review5

1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review6 KFA-45KFA-53 650 mm available (magnet to be displaced) Available Space (Tunnel) Available Space (Tunnel)

1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review7

Available Space (Surface) Reference: KFA-45 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review8 KFA 45: Bat. 365 75+25m² KFA-53: Approx. 50+20?m²

KFA45 area is crowded already (although controls consolidation could free up some space) Cables to SD53 would be too long. 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review9

Where to put the Pulse Generator? 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review10 KFA45 KFA53 51m 365 356 131 225 362

Space 365-1-405: No space available. Cables too long (should be <50m). 362: seems to small.(extension?) Cables too long. 365: (east end). Seems ok but TE-EPC owned. 356: possibly best location but TE-EPC owned. If none of the above is possible: New building between 365 and 356. 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review11

Concept and Main Parameters 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review12

Basic Concept for Magnet (I) Delay line magnets. Leave aperture for possible impedance shielding efforts (+6mm=59mm). Adapt magnet to rise time requirements in SC mode. Hence KFA 45 modules will not fit anymore (53mm). 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review13

Basic System Concept (II) Beam rigidity at 2 GeV is 9.29 Tm; Magnetic length is ~650 mm; 1.3 mrad kick requires ~850 A; Usage of RG220 cables desired; Thus max. 40kV ops max. 33kV nominal 27 kV. -> 27kV/0.85kA -> ~30 Ω system impedance. 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review14

Basic System Concept (III) 2 delay line magnets to be housed in new vacuum tank. Usage of known 60 Ohm low loss cable ( 2 in parallel). TX cables loaded with ferrites for pulse shaping. Refurbishment of 2 EPA generators. CX 1154 Switches. Hydraulic group (ELENA type) 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review15

Schedule 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review17

LS2 Draft Schedule - LIU-PS activities (as presented in Chamonix by J. Coupard) Consolidation work not included! 1/10/2014LIU-PS ABT review18 installation slot (PS tunnel) currently from August 2018 to mid November 2018 (3.5 month)

Planned Schedule 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review19 KFA-53 2014LIU-TDR (done) EOY 2014Functional Specification available. EOY 2014Site for generator found. Cable routing confirmed. Cable choice confirmed. Mid 2015Detailed system design & Technical Specification available (approved). EOY 2015Integration done. 1st drawings available. Long lead items ordered. Q1/2016All Drawings available. Production for “in-house” subcomponents started. Q3/2016Magnet and generator assembly starts. Q2/2017Assembly finished - Lab testing of complete system. Q3/2017Generator building available. Q4/2017Installation of Generator and PFL. Q3/2018Installation of magnet and cables Q1/2020HW/Beam commissioning

Budget 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review20

Budget breakdown Total Budget is currently 1.940 MCHF. Detailed breakdown to be done. Costs for building or adaption work of existing building not included so far. 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review21

Manpower / Resources 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review23

Manpower/Resources No detailed manpower planning available yet. Conceivable that additional manpower is needed. Integration/design effort to be estimated and requested at design office. Assembly area for magnet and generator will be 867 (within controlled zone). HV-Test cage for system testing needed in 2017. 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review24

Other: Consolidation of KFA-45 A refurbishment of the KFA-45 controls is envisaged as very similar KFA-53 controls needs to be developed anyway. The replacement of the KFA-45 SF6 cables is foreseen. Extension of cable shed for spare cable drum to be discussed. 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review25

Next steps Functional Specification. Integration and design effort to be estimated and requested at design office. Cable routing possibilities to be studied. Generator site to be fixed. (Budget to be adapted according to site requirements.) Technical design and specification to be started. 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review26

Conclusions KFA 53 requirements received. Conceptual design for LIU-TDR delivered. Functional Specification to be written until December. Resources estimate and Budget/Manpower planning to be done. Technical Specification to be delivered in mid 2015. Delivery of KFA-53 magnet and generator as foreseen in 2018. 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review27

Outlook w.r.t lessons learned during LS1 KFA53 project goes in parallel with many other consolidation and LIU projects. many unplanned events unscheduled interventions Injector restart after LS1 showed many unplanned events and subsequently unscheduled interventions (source sometimes outside ABT responsibility!). time for correction of non-conformities Also commissioning of renovated systems showed that time for correction of non-conformities was necessary. Staged approach of accelerator ramp up looks excellent in theory but for hardware sections it means that troubleshooting for already running CPS overlaps with PS/SPS commissioning whilst there is still installation work in the LHC ongoing. This has to be covered by the same manpower. With combined efforts it was manageable for LS1 but it will be a totally different challenge to deliver and commission several completely new (and additional) systems beside the usual start up business (and changing staff). 1/10/2014 LIU-PS ABT review28
