16 Responding to S&T co-operation with China – The Development of a Cross-Border Agro-Food Processing S&T Platform December 2004 Prof. Augusto Medina Prof. Medina is an experienced consultant and academic. He has directed numerous private and public sector projects, and has special interest in business development, promotion of innovation, international development, creation of strategic partnerships, technology transfer and human relation issues. Professor Medina has directed all of SPI’s work since its inception in 1996. This work includes research and development, innovation, training, e-business and entrepreneurial projects in Portugal and Western Europe, as well as in Asia, Africa, the USA and South America. Professor Medina received his doctorate in Chemical Engineering from the University of Birmingham, UK in 1976. In addition to his commercial experience, he has extensive academic experience and is currently Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Porto, Portugal. He is also an Honorary Doctor at the Moscow State Academy of Applied Biotechnology, Russia, has received ICEF Achievement Award in Industrial and Academic Food Engineering in 1997 and was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite from the President of the French Republic in 1995. 17 Responding to S&T co-operation with China – The Development of a Cross-Border Agro-Food Processing S&T Platform December 2004 Ms. Sara Medina Sara Medina is an economic consultant for SPI (Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação), having advised different private sector and public sector clients in a range of industries. Sara has a Bachelors degree in Food Engineering from the College of Biotechnology in Portugal, a European Masters degree in Food Studies from 5 major European Universities and a Ph.D. degree in Food and Resource Economics from the University of Florida, USA. Apart from her academic background, where she had the opportunity of developing expertise in areas of food processing and technology, econometrics, marketing and strategy, she has worked for two years with Accenture in the consulting area. She has consulted on different projects where she developed marketing and industrial strategies for a number of distribution and manufacturing companies in the agro - food sector. Sara published a number of scientific papers in international journals and presented at various international conferences around the world. Background

18 Responding to S&T co-operation with China – The Development of a Cross-Border Agro-Food Processing S&T Platform December 2004 Mr. Wu Bin Wu Bin is a marketing consultant with SPI China, helping European companies to enter the Chinese market, covering a broad range of products in sectors such as Textile, Food and Beverages and Equipment Goods. Wu Bin is SPI Chief Representative Officer in China. Some of the services he has provided include marketing studies for bridging Chinese partners and assisting in all visits and eventual business cooperation, assisting in two missions organized by CEFAMOL to visit Chinese mould companies for the impending cooperation through either direct investing in China or technical cooperation. Wu Bin has a Bachelors Degree from the University of International Business & Economics in Beijing, with a major in Economics. He has worked in ICEP (Portuguese Commercial Office) in Beijing for 6 years, successfully selling numerous Portuguese products in the Chinese market. Background

19 Responding to S&T co-operation with China – The Development of a Cross-Border Agro-Food Processing S&T Platform December 2004 Mr. Huang Can Huang Can is a business consultant with SPI, with a strong emphasis on business in the China market. Huang has a Bachelor degree in Economics and a Masters degree in Food Science from the Renmin University of China, Beijing, China. He is currently studying for a Ph.D. degree in Innovation Management in University of Aveiro, Portugal. Huang cooperates with SPI since 1999, first as an intern before helping SPI to set up their Beijing office in 2002. He has been a key member of the SPI China business since 2002. Previous to working with SPI, he worked as a journalist, editor and marketing manager in for an IT magazine in Business News International, Beijing (a US media group in Beijing, China). He also worked as an English teacher in Shi Li School, a private foreign language school in Beijing. Huang has developed knowledge in the fields of packaging, environmental protection, genetically modified food commercialisation, technological barriers to international trade, Chinese IT industry sector technology and strategy, and international innovation benchmarking practice. Mr. Taborda is involved in projects for Portuguese companies interested in initiating or strengthening international activities. Miguel Taborda has a Bachelors degree in International Relations from Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa in Portugal. Apart from his academic background, where he worked with Association Internationale des Etudiants en Sciences Economiques et Commerciales (AIESEC) in international student exchange, Miguel has experience in the IT sector, where he conducted market research and developed new business opportunities for a Portuguese company.
