4 B EING A L EADER T IPS FROM S IMON S INEK Great leaders inspire people to act and give people a sense of purpose or belonging Leaders do not have to provide a course of action but must provide a cause of action Provide a feeling of “we’re in this together” Start with the WHY – You must know WHY you do WHAT you do WHYWHY HOW WHAT WHY: belief HOW: actions you take to realize a belief WHAT: results of those actions

5 E NGAGING O THERS & G ETTING N EW M EMBERS Key points to keeping and gaining membership: 1. Knowing and being able to vocalize your WHY 2. Motivation and A Sense of Belonging 3. Offering opportunities for people to increase their involvement (options/ levels of involvement) 4. Membership Appreciation 5. Inclusivity

6 1. VOCALIZING YOUR WHY In your group, Each person will have 30 seconds to explain why their partner should join their club/ group or why it is important to them

7 2. M OTIVATION & A S ENSE OF B ELONGING To get people involved or interested, people must feel that they are getting something. (Growth, Recognition, Achievement, Participation, Enjoyment, Community) You need to figure out what people want, but can meet some intrinsic needs in the meantime. Idea for understanding what people want: 1. Asking directly (hopes) 2. One on Ones 3. Reflecting with current members

8 W AYS TO INCREASE MOTIVATION Develop a WHY and purpose Make people feel important – Affirm and praise people as a whole and as individuals Give people credit and status for the work they do Communicate simply, transparently and authentically to build trust and loyalty Consider and follow through on all members’ suggestions Give people a strong sense of community and belonging Use “We” statements (“I” statements for conflict) Play up the positives and not negatives Use members’ names and try to model inclusivity, stepping outside of your social group and put the focus on the individual Be fair and consistent

O PPORTUNITIES FOR INVOLVEMENT Meet people where they are Offer many different levels of involvement 4 Useful Persuasion Techniques: Foot-in-the-door: Ask for less, increase request Door-in-the-face: Ask for more, lower request Low-ball: getting a yes and increasing it Norm of reciprocity: I help you, you help me

10 4. M EMBERSHIP A PPRECIATION How do we create opportunities to affirm our membership? What programs or incentives can we provide to appreciate the work and presence of members? Remember: People need to feel important Give Praise Give People Status
