2 What is a Fingerprint? The skin on the palms of our hands and the soles of our feet is covered with FRICTION RIDGES. These ridges allow us to pick up and handle objects easily No two people (not even identical twins) have the same fingerprints

3 Three Groups of Fingerprints

4 Loops Found in 65% of population Can be radial or ulnar Radial Loop Ulnar Loop

5 Whorls Found in 35% of population Can be plain, double loop, central pocket loop, accidental Plain Whorl Central Pocket Whorl Double Loop Whorl Accidental Whorl

6 Arches Found in 5% of population Can be plain or tented arch Plain Arch Tented Arch

7 Conditions that prevent/ promote good fingerprints Temperature (hot or cold) Cleanliness (dirty or clean) Barriers (cloth or latex gloves) Surfaces (glass or brick)

8 Fingerprint Collection Dusting- used on hard surfaces (glass or tile) Fuming- used on smooth surfaces (plastic or paper)
