3 The Law Foretold of Christ and the Gospel The story of the coming Redeemer and God’s redemption is the theme of the Old Testament. (Gen. 3:15; Gen. 12:3; Gal. 3:8, 28; 2 Sam. 7:12- 13; etc.) The Old Testament indicates that through Jesus a new covenant would come. (Deut. 18:15-18; Matt. 17:5; Jer. 31:31; Heb. 8:13) Jesus rebuked the Jews for not seeing that Scripture testified of Him. (John 5:39) 5/23/2015 3

4 THE NATURE OF THE LAW OF MOSES THE LAW WAS GIVEN ONLY TO THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL (Deut. 4:44, 5:2, Rom. 9:4) THE LAW OF MOSES, INCLUDING THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, WAS NOT GIVEN TO PREVIOUS GENERATIONS (Deut. 5:2-3) THE LAW WAS NOT INTENDED FOR OTHER NATIONS (Deut. 4:7-8) THE LAW WAS NOT GIVEN TO THE GENTILES (Rom. 2:14; Eph. 2:12-13) THE LAW WAS DESIGNED TO POINT OUT SIN AND POINT MEN TO THE SAVIOR (Rom. 7:7, 3:20; Gal. 3:23-25) 5/23/2015 4

5 JESUS AND THE LAW Jesus recognized the authority of the Law. (Matt. 5:17-19) Jesus affirmed that the Law must be kept until it is fulfilled. (Matt. 5:19) Jesus affirmed that He was the fulfillment of the Law. (Matt. 5:17) 5/23/2015 5 Jesus Fulfilled the Law: 1.By perfectly keeping the Law. (Hebrews 4:15) 2.By fulfilling all that had been prophesied about Him.

6 Jesus Fulfilled Prophecy Jesus was born of a virgin (Isa. 7:14; Matt. 1:23) Jesus was born in Bethlehem (Mic. 5:2) Jesus was a prophet like Moses (Deut. 18:15 ff.) Jesus descended from Abraham and David. (Gen. 12:3; 1 Sam. 7:13-14) Jesus died for the sins of the world. (Isa. 53) Jesus was buried in a rich man’s grave. (Isa. 53:9) Jesus was raised from the dead. 7 Jesus Is the End of the Law Jesus is the mediator of a new covenant. (Heb. 9:15) The Law was a shadow of things to come and insufficient to remove sins. (Hebrews 10:1-2) Christ performed God’s will by offering a sacrifice to take away sin. (Heb. 10:9-10) Jesus took away the 1 st covenant to establish the second. (Heb. 10:9-10) We are sanctified through Christ. (Heb. 10:9-10) 5/23/2015 7

8 Applications Christians are not subject to the Ten Commandments Christians are not bound to tithing Christians cannot go to the Old Testament to authorize mechanical instruments of music in worship Christians are not commanded to observe the Sabbath 5/23/2015 8
