The Latin word for Phoenicians was “Punic” so that is why they are called the Punic Wars. The Romans took a Carthaginian ship that had been grounded and reversed engineered it to learn how to build ships, and this allowed them to become a sea power. Rome got involved because people living in Mescina on the island of Sicily asked them for help against pirates. People on the other side of the island asked Carthage for help. At the end of the war Rome had taken control of three islands off of their coast: Sicily, Sardinia, and Corsica. 4/20/2015 Pg 74-75

Hannibal, the great Carthaginian general, would lead his army, which included elephants, through Europe and across the Pyrenees and Alps to invade Italy. His plan against Rome was simple: early decisive victories and convince Roman allies to side with Carthage. He was successful with early decisive victories would was not able to convince Rome’s allies to join him. With Hannibal in Italy, Carthage was somewhat defenseless against Rome’s General. The Carthaginians quickly called for peace and Hannibal was sent home, having won every major battle he had fought. Carthage was defeated. The price was its colonies in Spain, surrounding territory in Africa, most of its navy, and even more money. 4/20/2015 Pg 74-75
