9. Cost (Western Undergraduate Exchange) WUE is a regional tuition reciprocity agreement.  No money is exchanged between states. The student pays reduced tuition directly to the enrolling institution. ◦ WUE makes out-of-state study AFFORDABLE! ◦ It’s a multilateral exchange; no “balance” between states is required. WICHE does not set qualification criteria for WUE applicants. *WUE is not automatically awarded to all eligible candidates

If student needs a leave of absence, confirm that institution will hold their WUE rate (they may not).

16. Population and Growth The West is projected to be the country’s fastest-growing region between 2000 and 2020 in terms of total population. The states with largest growth: Arizona and California Nevada, Washington, Colorado, and Utah. From 2011-2012 the West will continue to grow & ultimately top out with almost 4 million high school students in 2018-19.

17. State By State Arizona and Nevada are projected to see their high school graduating classes nearly double in size by 2021-22 if historical trends persist. Other Western states that can expect big changes by 2021-22 include Colorado (29.3 percent) Idaho (39.1 percent) Utah (42.4 percent) While California’s growth by 2021-22 will add substantially to the West’s total growth, it will represent only a 6.6 percent gain for the state.

24. Out of State College Resources What is RACC? The Regional Admission Counselors of California (RACC) is an organization composed of over 60 admission professionals, from over 50 institutions, who work with students and counselors throughout California while representing Universities and Colleges outside of the state of California. All of these out-of-state institutions are NACAC and/or WACAC members. They have dedicated the necessary resources for a regional office to serve California schools and provide information on educational opportunities out of state. www.regionaladmissions.com

Top 8 Reasons Why Students Should Consider Out of State Schools Specialized Programs An out-of-state school may be a good thing to consider if the school specializes in a degree program not offered at a college near home. Some degrees – for example Zoology, Nuclear Physics, Veterinary Medicine, Contemporary Music– are less commonly offered across the board. Lower Tuition Costs The cost for attending some out-of-state colleges may actually be less than an in-state college. For example, a California resident attending the University of California at Santa Barbara costs around $30,000. That same student may attend the University of Arkansas for around $26,000, Purdue University in Indiana for around $28,000, or the University of Nevada for around $18,000. Greater Independence Attending a school that is too far away to visit home regularly will require you to develop greater independence, life skills, and self-reliance. Out-of-State Scholarships Some colleges are having difficulty keeping enrollment up and they may be offering more scholarship opportunities to out-of-state students. Finding The Right Campus Vibe In some cases, the college environment may be a good reason for considering an out-of-state college. I New Cultural Experiences An out-of-state college may offer the student a new cultural experience. There are marked differences in the lifestyles of people from Southern California and Fayetteville, Arkansas, or people from New York City and Phoenix Arizona. Career Prospects With some occupations, the college where the degree was earned can be extremely important. Institutions like Harvard Law, John Hopkins Medical, or MIT for math and sciences may significantly impact job opportunity, but it’s also important to remember it’s what you do with your experience, regardless of where you study. Employment While In College Some states have been more heavily impacted by the down-turn in the economy, so part-time job opportunities may be more plentiful in another state.
