3 People’s beliefs varied according to where they lived. They tended to think that their local god had something to do with how the world began. 4 It was believed that gods often entered a creature sacred to them. You might see Nekhbet, goddess of Upper Egypt, as a vulture. Thoth, god of wisdom and writing, might take the shape of the ibis while the mongoose was sacred to Ra. In one story, Ra became a mongoose to fight the evil serpent. 6 Thoth was the god of writing and wisdom but was also connected with the moon. It was believed that Thoth gave the Egyptians the gift of hieroglyphic writing.
