1 LESSON 23 CHRISTIAN WITNESSING Opening Prayer:
Dear Savior, you brought us to faith in you for a reason. And you’ve even told us the reason! We know why we’re here. You leave us on earth for a while after bringing us to faith so that we can witness to others. We ask you to help us be good witnesses to you by the way we act and talk and live. Especially, help us speak about your sacrifice for sin and your promises of help and life. Help us see the people around us to whom we can witness. Give us the words to speak and the courage to speak up for you. You put us here for a purpose. Help us live up to your purpose for us! Amen. Introduction: In one sense witnessing about Jesus is spontaneous – look at the great truths and great things our God has done for us. Like the shepherds outside Bethlehem we want to “spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child.” (Luke 2:17) No one had to tell them or teach them what to say. Yet in another sense witnessing is learned. We think of the twelve disciples who spent 3 years with Jesus and learned through His preaching and teaching. We think of the 72 disciples Jesus sent out. Jesus gave them instructions or training before he sent them. For some this is our first year of PETT and for others a second year. We have spent considerable time in God’s Word. The Holy Spirit has opened our eyes to see God’s truth in Jesus. The Holy Spirit moves our hearts to live for Jesus and share what he has done for us with others. God’s Great Exchange is one way to share or present God’s plan of salvation. It is a simple Law—Gospel message to tell a friend about the Savior. It uses some simple illustrations to bring points across and help with retention. To God be the glory! Click to next slide.

2 WHY WITNESS? Why? What is our motivation for sharing the truths of God’s salvation? Click to next slide.

3 Matthew 28:19-20 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Parent and youth read together. This is our Lord’s Great Commission. Jesus came into the world with the mission to bring the world of rebellious, sinful people back to God the Father. Having completed His mission Jesus turns to His disciples and says: “Go…Make Disciples!” “Baptize…” “Teach them to obey everything!” These are the Christian’s marching orders! They are not given to angels. They are not given to the inner circle of disciples—Peter, James, and John. No, they are given to Jesus’ disciples of every age. God in His infinite wisdom has given us the responsibility to pass the message on. This is our Gospel ministry. Jesus attaches an all-important promise to our God-given mission and ministry. “I am with you always…” He is with us every step we take in life and every person we meet. Click to next slide.

4 Why Witness? 1) It is one of Christ’s commands and a part of our
ministry. Youth records notes. Click to next slide.

5 2 Corinthians 5:14 14For Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. Youth reads passage. Christ’s love…takes us to Calvary…where Jesus in love gave His life on the cross. Looking to the cross we remember John 3:16….God so loved the world. Looking to the cross we know “the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” The Lenten Hymn CW #120 captures this so clearly. What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul! What wondrous love is this, O my soul! What wondrous love is this That caused the Lord of bliss To bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul. To bear the dreadful curse for my soul. Click to next slide.

6 Why Witness? 1) It is one of Christ’s commands and a part of our
ministry. 2) Out of love for Christ, patterned Youth records note. Click to next slide. after God’s love.

7 2 Peter 3:9 9The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. Parent reads passage. In Romans 10 the Apostle Paul asks: “Who has known the mind of the Lord?” In Isaiah 55 the prophet tells us that God’s thoughts are not our thoughts nor God’s ways our ways. On the one hand we might think – God, use your power and make everyone believe. God does not force His love on us. On the other hand we might think – God, there are too many people to reach, it can’t be done. Ask: What does God want everyone to do according to this passage? Answer: God wants everyone to come to repentance. Click to next slide.

8 Romans 10:13-14 13for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”  14How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? Youth reads passage. In reverse order the Apostle Paul lists the steps for someone to call on the name of the Lord. God’s plan to to proclaim the Gospel 2) people hear the proclamation 3) the heard message works in the heart to believe 4) people with us and around us call on the name of the Lord Each step is based on the truth: “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Yes, the love of God for people moves to proclaim God’s saving message so that people hear the message. The message heard works in the hearts of people and leads them to believe. Yes, we rejoice that they with us “call on the saving name of the Lord.” Click to next slide.

9 Why Witness? 1) It is one of Christ’s commands and a part of our
ministry. 2) Out of love for Christ, patterned Youth records note. Click to next slide. after God’s love. 3) Out of love for our fellowman, for whom Jesus also died.

10 WHERE WITNESS? Motivated by the love of God for our fellowman we ask: where do we go? With God’s message. Click to the next slide.

11 Mark 5:19 19Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” Parent reads passage. Jesus had performed a miracle and heal this man who was possessed by an evil spirit. Healed, this man wanted to follow Jesus wherever he went. Jesus directed this healed man to stay right where his family and friends lived and share God’s mercy with them. This healed man knew God’s love in Jesus. The people in the area knew what this man was like before and after he met Jesus. Click to next slide.

12 Where Witness? 1) Personally, in our own lives (at home, work, school, etc.) Youth records note. Click to next slide.

13 Acts 13:2-3     2While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and Parent reads passage. The Gospel had spread to Antioch – some distance from Jerusalem. These early believers knew people in the world who did not know the Gospel. The Lord placed in their midst 2 men – Barnabas and Saul – whom the Lord wanted to use to take the Gospel to people. These believers prayed and fasted as they considered what the Lord would have them do. They placed their hands of blessing on Barnabas and Saul and sent them out in their behalf. Click to next slide.

14 Where Witness? 1) Personally, in our own lives (at home, work, school, etc.) 2) Supportively, throughout the world (missionary support) Youth records note. Today our church body has over 50 world missionaries who are taking the Gospel in our behalf to many people in different places through throughout the world. We pray for these missionaries. We provide financial support so they can give full-time attention to the Gospel ministry. Click to next slide.

15 GOD’S GREAT EXCHANGE (one way to tell a friend about the Savior)
God’s Great Exchange is one way we can share the Gospel with another person. Click to next slide.

16 God’s Great Exchange Approach #1:
Our greatest need: to be in a right relationship with God …. Are you? 1) If you were to die tonight, are you sure you would have eternal life? As you prepare for sharing God’s message there is what we might term pre-evangelism or pre-witnessing. This is the bond of friendship we establish where we earn the right to talk to him/her about deeper matters, such as his relationship with God. A second purpose of pre-evangelism or pre-witnessing is to receive more information about the persons which will be helpful when you are witnessing to him. One caution: Don’t allow yourself to be drawn into a religious argument. You might win the argument but in the process you might lose the right to speak to him about his Savior. In summary, use the time leading up to sharing God’s Great Exchange to: 1) Learn things about the person which will be helpful as you witness 2) Deal briefly with objections. Don’t major on the minors. 3) Earn the right to ask more personal questions thru the path of friendship Making the transition from social/secular matters to spiritual matters. Remember Jesus asked the woman at the well for a drink of water and went on to speak about “living water.” What is the purpose of these 2 Key Questions? One could ask: “Do you believe in Jesus?” They may answer “Yes, but not know God’s plan of salvation.” By using these 2 questions you will be able to determine whether a person is certain enough of his relationship with God to know where he’ll be spending eternity and the basis for his certainty or uncertainty. Question 2 should immediately follow question As they answer: “Heaven” or “I hope to be in heaven” use a clarifying question: “What makes you certain?” or “What makes you so sure?” That serves as a bridge to lead to Question 1. People will give one of 2 answers to Question 2. Either they will reply, “I’d tell Him that I believe in Jesus as my Savior” or words to that effect; or their answer will be “I’d tell him that I’d tried to live a good life,” or words to t hat effect. These are Key Questions. Common responses are: Uncertain—relying on works Uncertain—trusting in Jesus Certain—relying on works Certain– trusting in Jesus Also, if there is another person present ask the same question of the other person. Don’t be afraid of a little silence as the person pauses to give a thoughtful answer. Then proceed and offer: “Would you like to know what the Bible says in answer to that question?” Could I share God’s Great Exchange?” Click to next slide. 2) If you were to die tonight and stand before God, and He were to ask you, “Why should I let you into My heaven?” what would you tell Him?

17 God’s Great Exchange Approach #2:
Whatever the situation, the problem will be solved (or you’ll be given the ability to cope with it) when you are in a right relationship with God. This is our greatest need. Approach #2 starts with awareness of specific problem– a family problem, a work related problem and awareness as God promises: “I can do all things who through Him (Jesus) who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13. Mindful that we all face problems I wondering if I could ask about your relationship with God. This is our greatest need. Again, the witness understands that he/she has earned to right to ask the 2 key questions. Click to next slide. How can you tell if you are in a right relationship with God?

18 WHAT GOD DEMANDS a. You must have holiness.
1. There are 2 things that must happen for a person to be in a right relationship with God: a. You must have holiness. 1) Leviticus 19:2 – “Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.” Remember you have asked your friend the 2 Key Questions and they have given you permission to continue. Now it might be good to ask the host for a piece of paper so that you can illustrate God’s Great Exchange.” If you felt uncomfortable illustrating you might use a God’s Great Exchange tract and walk the friend(s) Through the major parts. There are 4 major parts: 1. What God Demands 2. What God See Man-made Remedies 4. God’s Remedy Then comes: God’s Promise Blessings That Follow Follow-Up So mindful of the big picture you offer: There are 2 things that must happen to be right with God You must have holiness. The Bible says: “Be Holy…” and “Cursed is everyone who does not do everything 2) Galatians 3:10 – “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”

19 WHAT GOD DEMANDS b. You must have no sins.
1. There are 2 things that must happen for a person to be in a right relationship with God: b. You must have no sins. 1) Isaiah 59:2 – “Your iniquities have separated you from your God.” And You must have no sins. The Bible says: “Your iniquities (another word for sin) have separated you from God.” and “The wages of sin is death.” As make both points and support these truths with the Bible, draw the next slide on a piece of paper. Click to next slide. 2) Romans 6:23a – “The wages of sin is death.”

20 WHAT GOD DEMANDS + holiness - sins = life
Draw a simple stickman – Head, arms, legs and the equation that + Holiness - Sins ______ = Life Reiterate: This is what God demands. Click to next slide. = life

21 WHAT GOD SEES 2. God demands that He see no sin, that He see only holiness. But what does He see? a. Looking at us, He sees people who lack holiness. Isaiah 64:6 – “We are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are as filthy rags.” Yes, God demands that He see no sin, that He see only holiness. But what does He see? a. He looks at us and sees people who lack holiness. God’s Word says “We are all an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are as filthy rags.” And b. He sees sinners. Scripture tells us that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” God sees people deserving death, not life. Let me show you this on our piece of paper: Click to next slide. b. He sees sinners. Romans 3:23 – “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” c. He sees people who are deserving of death, not life.

22 WHAT GOD SEES - holiness + sins = death
Show on piece of paper with stickman - holiness + sins = death Click to the next slide. = death

23 MAN-MADE REMEDIES 3. What can we do about this?
a. You might think, “Guess I’ll have to try harder,” but that won’t remove sin or make you perfectly holy, will it? This leads to the 3rd Main Point. What can we do about this? OK. I’ll just try harder to live a holy life. Will that remove the sin we have done? Draw a ladder and put an X where we are and then where we have to be. Click to next slide.

24 MAN-MADE REMEDIES 3. What can we do about this?
b. Or you might determine to make up for every sin with a good deed. But that doesn’t remove sin. What can we do? b. Or. Maybe I’ll make up for my mistakes by doing something good. Will that remove sin? Click to next slide.

25 MAN-MADE REMEDIES 3. What can we do about this?
c. Or you might think, “I’m not perfect; but at least I’m better than many others”. But God expects you to compare yourself to Him and His perfect holiness. Or, you might think, “I’m not perfect, but I’m better than most.” With whom are we to make comparisons? Draw 2 stickman -- one large and one smaller and the word “comparison”.

26 MAN-MADE REMEDIES 3. What can we do about this?
d. All such self-help efforts are doomed to fail. All three “man-made remedies” are doomed to failure. All three follow the path of the Law – that we can do something to make ourselves right with God. There is no way that we can through human effort get to where God expects us to be. But there is a way. God has a remedy for this situation. We might call that remedy God’s Great Exchange.” Click to next slide. Try Harder Balancing Act Comparison

27 GOD’S REMEDY 4. ONLY God has the remedy. His remedy might be called GOD’S GREAT EXCHANGE. a. He sent His only Son into the world to become one of us. b. His Son lived a perfectly holy life – in our place. God’s Remedy centers not in what we do but in a person. That person is God’s own Son, Jesus. We’ll let this symbol of the CROSS REPRESENTS JESUS. Who is Jesus? The Bible tells us that Jesus is God Himself from all eternity. He became a human being like one of us. He lived in our world almost 2000 years ago and was like us in every way with one important exception: He is the only one who ever perfectly obeyed every one of God’s commandments. On one occasion one of Jesus’ enemies seeking to pin something on Him. He turned to them and said: “Can any of you prove Me guilty of sin?” (John 8:46) No one could. His enemies tried to find false witnesses to tell lies about Him. But even His enemies did not agree. They were coached on what to say and yet somehow couldn’t keep their story straight. It’s as though God were telling the world, “There’s no one who can find one fault in my Son. He lived an absolutely holy, sin-free life.” Jesus, then, unlike us, was one who by His holy, sinless life perfectly fulfilled every requirement of God for life with Him now and life forever. His life ended on the cross. But why was He put to death? God’s Word reveals: “The Lord laid on Him the iniquity (wickedness, sin) of us all” (Isaiah 53:6). God actually transferred my sins and yours and the sins of all to Jesus and let Him pay the penalty for them which is death, separation from God. Remember Jesus announced: “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” And a little later: “It is finished!” Jesus had paid the wages of our sin: death. Click to next slide. c. His Son died on a cross, paying the wages of sin in our place; for “the Lord laid on Him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6).

28 GOD’S REMEDY 4. ONLY God has the remedy. His remedy might be called GOD’S GREAT EXCHANGE. d. God has credited the perfect life of Jesus and His death for sin to our account: 2 Corinthians 5:21 – “God made Him who had no sin to be, sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” e. His son rose from the grave, guaranteeing our redemption: Romans 4:25 – “He was raised to life for our justification.” The Bible says: “God made him (Jesus) who had no sin to be sin for us so that in him (Jesus) we might be made the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21) Not only did God put all of our sins on Jesus, He also credited the perfect life of Jesus to us. Through Jesus we become the righteousness of God. A hymn writer captures it this way: Jesus, Your blood and righteousness My beauty are, my glorious dress. With these before My God I’ll stand. When I shall reach the heavenly land. We have sins forgiven and the holiness of Jesus. See the importance of the Resurrection of Jesus. Jesus didn’t remain in the grave. The Bible tells us that He rose from the dead and that “He was raised to life for our justification!” Remember the meaning of “justification” – that God sees me “just as if I did no wrong” or has declared me “not guilty.” Awesome! Add up what Jesus has done: Perfect life and death for sin. Offering His righteousness as our Holiness = Certain we have LIFE! Can we be CERTAIN that God in heaven accepted the perfect life and the death of Jesus in our place? The Guarantee in all this is Christ’s Resurrection! Click to next slide. f. The result: we have the holiness (Jesus’ holiness) and the removal of sin we need for life. What God requires of us – holiness and sinlessness – God gives to us.

29 GOD’S REMEDY GOD’S GREAT EXCHANGE + holiness + holiness - sin - sin
my sins - sin - sin Jesus’ holiness Draw on a piece of paper: JESUS I, THE SINNER + holiness thru Faith + holiness Cross - sin of Jesus sin ________________________________ = Life the gift of God = Life What an unbelievable truth God gives me in Jesus! Jesus has come “that I might have life, and have it to the full!” (John 10:11) Click to next slide. = LIFE = LIFE GOD’S GREAT EXCHANGE

30 GOD’S PROMISE 5. This new life is yours as a gift.
a. Romans 6:23 – “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. b. God promises you: Acts 16:31 – “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ (put your trust and confidence in Him as one who lived a holy life and died for you in your place) and you will be saved.” This new status in God’s eyes in mine as a gift. There’s the Law: “The wages of sin is death” but that same passage receives the Gospel: “but the GIFT of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” God gives eternal life through Jesus. In the book of Acts Paul and Silas had been imprisoned for preaching about Jesus. Instead of complaining they were singing praises to God late in the night. There was a great earthquake which opened the doors and freed them from their chains. The jailer concluding his prisoners had escaped and that he was responsible was about to take his life. Paul stopped him: “We’re all here!” The jailor falling to his knees asked the most important question that can ever be asked: “What must I do to be saved?’ Paul’s answer: “Believe in the Lord Jesus…” That’s God’s promise. Put your trust and confidence in Jesus who lived a holy life and then died for your sins in your place. What a joy to see the Gospel at work! God worked faith and new life in the heart of the jailor. He and his family were baptized. Go back to our 2nd Key Question. God asks: “Why should I let you into my heaven?” We have nothing to offer from our life but we can point to JESUS! God made me a promise -- eternal life is mine through faith in Jesus and what He has done for me. He certainly is a wonderful God, isn’t He? Click to next slide. c. God produces faith and new life through the Gospel: Romans 1:16 – “The Gospel is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.

Since we been “born again—given new life—through the living and enduring Word of God (I Peter 1:23) and since God wants us to grow I Peter 2:2 “…grow up in your salvation now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.” We want to stay close to the Word. Bring this friend or interested with you to worship. Offer to bring him/her with you to Bible Information Class like New Life in Christ. Offer to pick him/her up and come along to help make them feel welcome. Perhaps we can Leave a copy of the Bible – New Testament. Leave a copy of God’s Great Exchange. In closing you may restate those 2 Key Questions: If you were to die today, are you sure you would have eternal life? Remember I ask: What is it that makes you certain? And: “If you were to die tonight and stand before God, and He were to ask: “Why should I let you into my heaven?’ what would you tell Him” The friend or interested part answer: I believe in Jesus Christ as my personal Savior and Lord. To God be the glory!

42 KEY TRUTHS Lesson Twenty-Three: We witness because it is one of Christ’s ___________, we witness out of _____ for Christ and out of ______ for our fellowman. One way to tell others about Jesus is by talking about God’s Great Exchange.
