2 Do you know anything about Chinese culture? Chinese culture is very interesting andmeaningful to the Chinese and other people. Do you know what the Chinese family is like? Do you want to find out, and see howimportant it is?

3 CHINESE FOOD Jiaozie is a boiled or steamed dumpling that can be found in many Chinese restaurants. Rice is a very common part of a Chinesemeal and can pretty much be found in all meals. Fast food inChina is getting very popular and is more popular than before.Many U.S. restaurants have opened up in China like McDonaldsand KFC. Steamed dumplings and noodles are a common partof a typical Chinese meal. Chinese food contains lots of beans,fats and carbohydrates. People who lived close to the river ate alot of fish because they lived near the river and they could catchfish easily so it was convenient and free for the villagers wholived by the river or the sea. Most Chinese meals are servedwith small pieces of vegetables and meat. Many people wholived in China were farmers and grew a lot of rice because riceis very important in China. 4 CHINESE FOOD Chinese food is known for three very important things: aroma, color, and its flavor. In China thenumber one main crop was rice. Rice became themain staple for most of the country. People inChina also ate goats, pigs, chicken, and fish. OnNew Years Day, more food is consumed than anyother holiday in the Chinese culture. On NewYears Day the Chinese people eat one of theirfavorite dishes, small meat dumplings and wheatbread. In the South most of the typical disheswere Nian Gao, which is a sticky cake. 5 GETTING MARRIED IN CHINA A bride in China that is going to getmarried in the modern day has towear three special outfits on herwedding day. The bride will have tobuy a special red dress and wear newshoes. For religious brides there willbe no church ceremony. Women couldnot say whom they wanted to marry,their parents decide for them and theycould not even get a say. A wedding in china

6 CHINESE TRADITIONS The night before the wedding day is very serious, at dawn the bride has to take a bath so she doesnot have to do it in the morning, on the weddingday the bride has to wake up very early to go toa photo salon to get her picture taken, then shehas to go get her wedding dresses. The bridealways has to bring at least three differentdresses, one to wear and the others to bring. 7 FESTIVALS The Qi Xi festival is like a Chinese valentines day but it is celebrated on a different day and can also be called the double seventh festival. AChinese bride will have to paint boiled eggs the color red because thecolor red is a lucky color in the Chinese culture. Getting married inChina is very expensive. During the dragon boat festival you racedragon boats, eat rice dumplings and wear special perfume becausea famous poet, Qu Yuan killed himself by jumping into a river after hefound out that his homeland had been conquered and the day hekilled himself is now known as the dragon boat festival. The Moon festival is celebrated in mid-autumn and that is why it can also be called the Mid-Autumn festival you also eat rice cakes during thisfestival. The Chinese had to respect their parents at all times evenafter they died and at all ages. During the lantern festival you eat ricedumplings, do the Hon dance and the dragon dance. 8 FUN FACTS Only wealthy women in China were allowed to wear silk robes but the lowerranked people were not allowed to wear silk. Merchants were considered thelowest class of workers and they were not allowed to ride in carriages or wearsilk. Only wealthy boys attended school but the lower ranked people did not go toschool and get educated. The Chinese calendar is based of the movement of the moon and is called alunar calendar. One of the unlucky numbers is 4 because in Chinese it sounds like the worddeath. The number 2 in the Chinese culture is considered lucky because in Chineseit means good things come in pairs. In the Chinese culture 3 is a luckynumber because it sounds like the word birth. The numbers 6 and 7 are alsoconsidered lucky in the Chinese culture. In China there are 5 primary colors and the colors are red, black, green,white and yellow.

9 FUN FACTS In the Chinese house, the Chinese family was ruled by the father, they hadto respect their father at all times and obey his orders. Women took care of the children and cooked the meals. The majority of the people who lived near the mountains were farmers.Farmers were respected because they provided for the rest of the Chineseeven though they lived tough lives. A typical farmer lives in a small village of around 100 families. In China only wealthy boys went to school but the girls got their feet boundin the palace very expensive and the poor families could not afford it.
