School of Applied Sciences Designing the Future Molecules  Materials  Function

Applied Science Programs - Breadth Versus Depth Single bachelor degrees (3 years) - Applied Science multimajor (BP229) or a flagship program Double bachelor degrees Integrated Honours degrees (4 years) Masters by coursework, graduate diploma and graduate certificate Master by research, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Science Programs – An Overview 3 – Year programs with an ATAR of 65+ Applied Sciences Biotechnology & Biology /Bioscience Food Science & Technology Environmental Science Chemistry Physics 4 - Year programs with an ATAR of 80+ Nanotechnology Double Degrees with Engineering Double Degree with Business Double Degree Biotechnology/ Biomed Deans Scholars Program

Bachelors of Science Applied Science BP229 In addition to Applied Chemistry, Biological Sciences and Physics which have named degree plan, you can major in Biotechnology, Environmental Sciences and Food Science. All seven major disciplines in this program follow this common plan: 7 core courses 11 specialised courses to define a major 4 science electives 2 student electives BH101 Deans Science Scholars program Deans Scholars – 4 years integrated Hons with a much stronger emphasis on independent research skills from the onset.

Biotechnology and Biosciences - Degrees Biological Sciences BP229, 3 Years (within the Applied Science Program) Biotechnology BP226, 3 Years Deans Scholars program BH101, 4 year integrated Hons Biotechnology/Biomedical Science double degree BP293, 4 years Chemical Engineering/Biotechnology BP159, 5 Years

Biotechnology & Biosciences – Plant & Animal Biology Structure & Function Plant and Animal Diversity Cell & Tissue Culture Marine Biology

Biotechnology and Biosciences Genetics Immunology Cell & Tissue Culture Clinical Microbiology

Food Technology & Nutrition - Degrees Food Technology & Nutrition BP199, 3 Years Food Technology & Nutrition / Chemical Engineering BP236, 5 Years Food Technology / Business double degree BP289, 4 years Deans Scholars BHP101, 4 years integrated Hons

Food Technology & Nutrition - Courses Food Chemistry Food Manufacture Product Development Quality Assurance Sensory Evaluation of Food Food Preservation Nutrition Principles Carbohydrates/ Lipids / Proteins in Food Science Microbiology Food Microbiology

Environmental Science Degrees B. Environmental Science BP 192, 3 years B. Environmental Science/B. Business (Management) BP161, 4 Years B. Environmental Science/ B. Social Science (Environment) BP193, 4 years B. Environmental Science/Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental Engineering) BP235, 5 Years Macro invertebrates tell us how healthy the water is.

Students learn to …. Saline soils are very poor for agriculture and easily wash away.

Learning to identify marine creatures …. In rock pools in the Marine Biology course Or underwater on coral reefs off Lizard Is. in a fieldwork elective.

Applied Chemistry B. Sciences BP229 (Applied Chemistry) 3 years Deans Scholars program BH101, 4 year integrated Hons B. Science (Applied Chemistry)/B. of Business (Management) BP160 4 years B. Science (Applied Chemistry)/B Engineering (Chemical Engineering) (Hons) BH098, 5 years B. Science (Applied Chemistry)/ B. Engineering (Chemical Engineering), 5 years

Applied Chemistry Fundamental Chemistry –Analytical chemistry –Inorganic and organometallic chemistry –Organic chemistry –Physical chemistry Applied Chemistry –Catalysis –Food Chemistry –Industrial Chemistry –Medicinal Chemistry –Radiochemistry –Theoretical chemistry and molecular modelling

Physics BP229, 3 years Deans Scholars program BH101, 4 year integrated Hons B. Science (Physics/ B. Engineering (Electronic and Communication Engineering), BH097 5 years

Physics Fundamental Physics Mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism Nuclear Physics Radiation, fusion & fission, medical physics Solid State Physics Semiconductors and advanced materials Optics and Waves Photonics, lasers and holography Quantum Mechanics First principles modeling of matter, sub atomic particles, quantum computing Applied Physics Instrumentation Energy & the Earth’s Environment Astrophysics

Nanotechnology Nanotechnology/Applied Sciences Double Degree BP247 4 Years (Physics stream or Chemistry stream)

What makes RMIT science programs special Entry pathways from Diploma and Associate degree run in VET Choice with specialization – a major / minor combination, double degree or integrated Hons Strong hands on component – plenty of practical experience, labs, pilot plant, and field trips All students do an independent project in their final year All student will complete either a work placement or a project based team working component Science / University elective components International OS experience, semester exchange, OS work experience, International Student volunteers (ISV)

All students do a science research project in their final year… Working in teams on real projectsThese activities rehearse skills needed in industry
