2. Our school PTA needs help planning the upcoming Spring Carnival. The PTA wants to compare the cost of using a party planner to the cost of having 5 th grade committees plan the carnival.

4. Instructions for 5 th Grade Committees Spring Carnival Planning Last year, the PTA used a party planner to plan the Spring Carnival. Not only did they pay a lot for the help of the party planner, but they also felt that they didn’t get the best deals on everything they needed. They need your help to make this year’s Spring Carnival less expensive, but still fun-filled! The PTA needs 7 separate committees and have included very specific requirements for your work. For each committee, the PTA has included several charts containing information on cost from last year’s Spring Carnival. This includes costs for certain items the PTA purchased and cost (in dollars or tickets) for various items available during the carnival. The PTA would like each committee to try to find a better offer for each service and item needed for the carnival. The costs will need to remain reasonable and will be compared to the costs from last year. You will work on this project for 3 days and then present your ideas on the 4 th day. Your presentation will need to be supported with data tables, graphs and your descriptions and comparisons of the data. Your presentation will need to persuade the PTA that the options you present are less expensive, but still fun.

5. Instructions for 5 th Grade Committees Spring Carnival Planning Day 1 - Work with your committee to fill in the missing information in the data tables provided by the PTA. As a committee, create a better offer for each service and/or item needed. Lastly, describe the patterns you notice in the tables provided by the PTA and the patterns in the tables you create. Discuss any relationships that exist between the two. Day 2 – Work with your committee to create graphs based on your data tables from yesterday. You should include a line representing the cost from last year and the projected cost with your better offer. Describe the graphs and the relationships between the costs. Day 3 – Work with your committee to complete your descriptions of the graphs and the relationships between the costs. Prepare your presentation. Keep in mind, you should use the tables and graphs you created in your presentation. You should also make clear the relationships between last year’s cost and this year’s cost as you work to persuade the PTA that you’ve found less expensive options. Day 4 – Individual committees present their findings to the class. Other committees make notes about the change in cost and ideas presented by each committee. Your teacher will serve as a PTA representative to decide if the committee created fun-filled, less expensive options for the Spring Carnival.

Discuss any relationships that exist between the two. Find the numerical patterns and describe the patterns they create. Record your descriptions on Day 85, “Describing the Patterns”.
