3 Energy Challenge - main challenges Support the transition to a reliable, sustainable and competitive energy system Reducing energy consumption and carbon footprint Boosting development of renewable and alternative energy technologies and their integration in the energy system Making the grid more flexible (inclusion of new energy sources, lowering costs of necessary infrastructure upgrades) Decarbonising the power and other industrial sectors Increase the competitiveness of European industry Addressing the whole supply chain Increase energy efficiency in industry, decrease energy costs Building a European Research Area in the field of energy Coordinating research activities of Member States, Associated States and Regions (promoting SET-Plan)

4 Secure, Clean and Efficient Energy Three focus areas: Energy Efficiency Competitive Low-Carbon Energy Smart Cities and Communities synergy with other relevant areas, e.g. information and communication technologies. Industrial participation in the programme is crucial for developing new generations of low carbon technologies and rolling them out to the market. Given the central role of SMEs as a source of innovation, growth and jobs in Europe, this work programme features a number of topics particularly tailored to the needs of SMEs, including one topic for the SME instrument 11.

17 ICT in H2020 – Workprogram 2014 - 2015 Advanced research to uncover radically new technological possibilities and ICT contributions to research and innovation are addressed in the ‘Excellent science’ part of the work programme, respectively under ‘Future and Emerging Technologies’, ‘European research infrastructures’ (‘eInfrastructures’); Research and innovation activities on generic technologies either driven by industrial roadmaps or through a bottom up approach are addressed in the ‘Leadership in enabling and industrial technologies’ (LEIT) part of the work programme, under ‘Information and communication technologies’ Multi-disciplinary application-driven research and innovation leveraging ICT to tackle societal challenges are addressed in the different ‘Societal challenges’. 17

The work programme also includes cross-cutting, horizontal and international activities. 20

21 A new generation of components and system Electronics, microsystems and embedded systems This area addresses the broad range of systemic integration from smart integrated components to cyber-physical systems. 22 Advanced computing This area focuses on the integration of advanced components on all levels in computing systems. The strategic focus is to reinforce and expand Europe's industrial and technology strengths in low-power ICT. 23 Future internet The Future Internet topics will address the limitations of an Internet not designed to support the very large set of requirements imposed by an ever more diversified usage; support the advent of more efficient computational and data management models responding to the challenges posed by increased device / object connectivity and data-intensive applications; leverage the Internet to foster innovative usages of social and economic value also benefiting from the geospatial capabilities of the Future Internet.

28 Micro- and nano-electronic technologies, Photonics Topics in this area address research and innovation in the two ICT Key Enabling Technologies (KETs), micro- and nanoelectronics and photonics. The objective is to take advantage of Europe's S&T excellence in these two ICT KETs to strengthen the competitiveness and market leadership of the related industries and develop innovative solutions to societal challenges. The micro- and nanoelectronics part will be implemented by the Joint Technology Initiative (JTI) on 'Electronic Components and Systems'25 and through this Work Programme. 28

33 Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials ICT is expected to contribute to the activities foreseen in two calls: ‘Waste: A Resource to Recycle, Reuse and Recover Raw Materials’ (WASTE), ‘Water Innovation: Boosting its value for Eurpe’ (WATER).
