1 Doral Academy Preparatory School
Parent Testing Info. Session (February 24, 2015)

2 Testing Information Night
What is new? What can you do to help your child?

3 What are the Florida Standards?
The Florida Standards in Mathematics and English Language Arts were approved by the Florida State Board of Education in February 2014 and will be fully implemented in grades K–12 in the 2014–2015 school year. All Florida schools will teach the Florida Standards, and the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) has contracted with the American Institutes for Research (AIR) to develop and administer new statewide assessments. These assessments will provide parents, teachers, policy makers and the general public with information regarding how well students are learning the Florida standards.

4 Why the change? To help develop 21st Century learners who can compete in a global workforce. The following Florida Standards Assessments will be administered for the first time in Spring 2015: • Grades 6–10 English Language Arts (Writing component in grades 6–10) • Grades 6–8 Mathematics • Algebra 1 End-of-Course Assessment • Geometry End-of-Course Assessment • Algebra 2 End-of-Course Assessment

5 FSA Writing Assessment
FSA Writing Component- Grades 6-10 Students will have 90 minutes to test but may be allowed to continue working an additional 30 minutes, if needed.

6 FSA Writing Component Tuesday Morning, Governor Rick Scott announced that the FSA Reading and Writing test is cancelled for 11th Grade. Therefore, the 11th Graders will not be taking the FSA Reading and Writing Assessment this school year.

7 FSA Writing Component Grades 6 and 7 will be a paper-based test
Grades 8-10 will be a computer-based test All students will be provided with a one-page planning sheet.

8 FSA Writing Component Students will be asked to read up to four sources and write either an argumentative or informative essay. Students taking the test on the computer cannot use tab to indent, they have to use the space bar 5 times and press enter to move on to the next paragraph. Students have reviewed all the computer tools with their teachers and have been practicing typing their essays in their classes.

9 FSA Reading and Listening Test
Grades 6-10 Students in grades 6,7,8 will have two sessions of 85 minutes for the Reading test. Students in grades 9 and 10 will have two sessions of 90 minutes for the Reading test.

10 FSA Reading and Listening Test
All students in grades 6-10 will be taking the Reading test on the computer. All students will be provided with a CBT worksheet that they can use to take notes on the passages. There will be around questions for grades 6- 8 and questions for grades 9-10.

11 FSA Reading and Listening Test
The test will be composed of Reading Comprehension, Grammar, and Listening skills. Students will have a grammar portion in which they have to edit 2-3 paragraphs of text. Students will have a listening portion in which they have to listen to a passage that is 2-3 minutes long and answer questions. IMPORTANT:*Students need to bring their own headphones for the listening part of the test.*

12 FSA Reading And Listening Test
Students will have the option on the computer to enlarge the font and zoom in and out and also highlight the text. Students will have a color contrast option which they should not touch unless they truly have that accommodation. Once they change the color contrast it will stay that way for the whole entire test. Students have reviewed all computer tools with their teachers in their classes and have also been practicing the question types and reading on the computer with Reading Plus.

16 Scoring: FSA Writing and Reading Test
The text-based writing component will be combined with the reading component to form ONE SINGLE ELA SCORE. It has not yet been determined how much the writing component weighs compared to the reading component. There will be two separate scores as well (one for writing and one for reading). If students do not take BOTH components of the test (grades 6-10), then they will NOT receive an ELA score. When examining the rubrics, look at the overarching statements- the response doesn’t have to include ALL the bullet points underneath, but should contain most of them. (see sample on following slides) There will be 1 hand scorer and 1 automated- if the scores don’t agree, the human score prevails. If there is a big discrepancy between the 2 scores, then it will go to a 3rd scorer and that will determine the overall score. Highest score is a 10 for the writing component.-a 7 is satisfactory. The highest score is a 5 for the reading component-level 3 is satisfactory. If the response is simply copied and there is NO original work, the response will be unscorable.

17 FSA Mathematics Test Grades 6-8
FSA Math Assessment Grades 6-8 Students in grades 6,7,8 will have two days of testing for math. Session 1 will be tested on day 1 and sessions 2 and 3 on day 2. Each session is 60 minutes.

18 FSA Mathematics Test Grades 6-8
All students in grades 6-8 will be taking the Mathematics test on the computer. All students will be provided with a four page work folder for scratch paper. *6th Graders cannot use calculators, 7th and 8th graders can ONLY use calculators online for sessions 2 and 3.* There will be around questions for grades 6- 8 FSA Math Exam.

19 FSA Mathematics Test Grades 6-8
Students will have the option on the computer to enlarge the font and zoom in and out . Students will have a color contrast option which they should not touch unless they truly have that accommodation. Once they change the color contrast it will stay that way for the whole entire test. Students have reviewed all computer tools with their teachers in their classes and have also been practicing the question types in their math classes.

20 Question Types-Math Selectable Hot Text – Excerpted sentences from the text are presented in this item type. When the student hovers over certain words, phrases, or sentences, the options highlight. This indicates that the text is selectable (“hot”). The student can then click on an option to select it. Drag-and-Drop Hot Text – Certain numbers, words, phrases, or sentences may be designated “draggable” in this item type. When the student hovers over these areas, the text highlights. The student can then click on the option, hold down the mouse button, and drag it to a graphic or other format.

21 Question Types-Math Open Response – The student uses the keyboard to enter a response into a text field. These items can usually be answered in a sentence or two. Multi Select – The student is directed to select all of the correct answers from among a number of options. These items are different from multiple-choice items, which allow the student to select only one correct answer. Graphic Response Item Display (GRID) – The student selects numbers, words, phrases, or images and uses the drag-and-drop feature to place them into a graphic. This item type may also require the student to use the point, line, or arrow tools to create a response on a graph.

22 Question Types-Math Equation Editor – The student is presented with a toolbar that includes a variety of mathematical symbols that can be used to create a response. Responses may be in the form of a number, variable, expression, or equation, as appropriate to the test item. Matching Item – The student checks a box to indicate if information from a column header matches information from a row. Table Item – The student types numeric values into a given table. The student may complete the entire table or portions of the table depending on what is being asked.

23 Scoring- FSA Mathematics Grade 6-8
• Achievement Levels―The success a student has achieved with the Florida Standards will be assessed by mathematics assessments and is described by Achievement Levels that range from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest). Level 3 indicates satisfactory performance.

24 Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry EOC Exams
The Algebra 2 Test is new this school year and is an FSA test. Algebra 1 and Geometry are now being assessed by the Florida Standards, so this school- year they became FSA tests. The Math EOCs are administered in two sessions for 90 minutes each session. *Scientific calculators are provided online as part of the CBT platform for Session 2 only for all Math FSA EOCs. The calculators are available for practice on the FSA portal. *

25 Scoring-EOC Math Exams
