1 Task: Recycling – is this the answer, and is it working?
You are an environmental scientist working for a local community group and the group has recently been concerned about different areas of the local community. There have been reports about the stream which runs through the area looking green and foamy, and suggestions that some local industries and farmers are not being as careful as they should be with some of the things they are doing.

2 Recycling After a meeting, it is decided that everyone needs to be made more aware of the dangers of pollution, and how it can be reduced. You have been asked to prepare a poster display detailing how the community could work together to reduce pollution in the town, and give some examples of where some methods have been trialled.

3 Recycling The poster will be displayed in the town hall for all visitors to see, and needs to be eye catching and engaging. Include the following in your display: Describe how the following methods can help to reduce pollution: recycling and reusing breeding programmes using renewable resources – e.g. wind, solar using organic fertilisers and biological control of pests. For each of these methods you should say -how they can be used -how they reduce the effects of human impact -benefit the ecosystem where they are used. For each of the methods above discuss at least -two advantages -two disadvantages.

4 Choose an example of where some of these methods have been used and provide evidence to suggest whether they have been successful in counteracting pollution or not. Suggest ways that these methods could be improved further, or if there are other techniques that could be used. Hint: You will need to include other ways that can be used to reduce pollution that are not included in the list in task 2 part a). If your research has been thorough then you should have read about some of these other ways in the unit specification.

5 Recycling and reusing How can it be used?

6 Recycling and reusing How does it reduce effects of humans?

7 Recycling and reusing How can it benefit the environment it is used in?

8 Recycling and reusing Advantages and disadvantages?

9 Recycling and reusing P182 explain the terms reduce Reuse
How can recycling and reusing be used? How does recycling and reusing reduce the effects of human impact? P182 explain the terms reduce Reuse Give 3 x examples of reusing Recycle Give 3x examples of recycling Recycling and reusing How does recycling and reusing benefit the ecosystem where they are used? Two advantages Two disadvantages Look at the yellow box What are the problems Of recycling paper LEAVE THIS FOR NEXT LESSON

10 Breeding programmes Two advantages Two disadvantages
How can BREEDING PROGRAMMES be used? How do BREEDING PROGRAMMES reduce the effects of human impact? Breeding programmes How do BREEDING PROGRAMMES benefit the ecosystem where they are used? Two advantages Two disadvantages

11 Using renewable resources – e.g. wind, solar
How can RENEWABLE RESOURCES be used? How do RENEWABLE RESOURCES reduce the effects of human impact? P184- Give examples Why do we use these resources/ what do they make If we use renewable energies which resources will we use less of? Why is this an advantage? Using renewable resources – e.g. wind, solar How do RENEWABLE RESOURCES benefit the ecosystem where they are used? Two advantages Two disadvantages Two advantages of wind energy Two disadvantages of wind energy Two advantages of solar energy Two disadvantages of solar energy

12 Why are organic fertilisers better than non organic fertilisers?
How can using organic fertilisers and biological control of pests be used? How does using organic fertilisers and biological control of pests reduce the effects of human impact? Why are organic fertilisers better than non organic fertilisers? Why are biological control of pests better Than pesticides P184 What is biological control of pests? What are organic fertilisers? Using organic fertilisers and biological control of pests How does using organic fertilisers and biological control of pests benefit the ecosystem where they are used? Two advantages Two disadvantages Biological pest control Organic fertilisers
