1 Key Stage 3 A Pull-a-Long Toy ‘Freddie’ the Frog A Suggested Year 8/9 Project RA Moffatt WELB

2 A Pull-a-Long Toy ‘Freddie’ the Frog RA Moffatt WELB

3 A Mechanical Toy Design Learning Opportunities: To introduce pupils to basic mechanisms / mechanical movement – cams / eccentricity; To develop basic design and manufacturing skills; Design Appreciation: to understand that changes could be made to the design and to develop an awareness of the constraints when manufacturing. To develop an understanding of a range of manufacture processes; To introduce basic engineering concepts – fiction, Interference / clearance-fit, eccentricity, etc. Activity Description: Theory Mechanical Systems: : The pupils study mechanisms for approximately 3 x 35min periods; Manufacture: To manufacture a number of the models parts from set working drawings;

4 Design Opportunities: a)Show using concept sketches five alternative designs for the frog’s body; b)Explain using graphics the mechanical solution for making the toy move up and down include notes / annotation; c) Show using graphics how a cam may be fitted to make the head move up and down (reciprocate motion); d) Show examples of where an interference-fit and a clearance-fit is used in this project; e) Name two suitable materials for the body and wheels of this toy design? f)State a suitable protective finish for this project? 7 A Mechanical Toy Design Learning Opportunities: To introduce pupils to basic mechanisms and mechanical movement - cams, & linkages; To develop basic manufacturing skills and techniques; To develop a range of design and manufacture skills; To understanding a basic product specification; To be able to interpret a working drawing. Activity Description: Theory: The pupils study mechanisms for approximately 3 x 35min periods Manufacture: To manufacture a number of the models parts from set working drawings. Design Appreciation: to discuss alternative modifications to the toy design / reverse engineering
