2. Tobacco’s Many Costs For every dollar spent to spread the word about the dangers of tobacco, tobacco companies spend $23 on marketing. Whether or not they smoke, U.S. taxpayers pay around $38 billion each year in federal taxes to treat the many health problems caused by smoking.

3. Cost to the Individual Average cost of a pack of cigarettes in NJ= $7 Average smokers goes through a pack and a half each day. How much will you spend in a week, month, and year? 4. Costs to the Nonsmoker Secondhand smoke- smoke that is released into the air that everyone breathes. Sidestream smoke- smoke that comes directly from a burning end of a cigarette, pipe, or cigar. ◦Contains twice as much tar and nicotine. Mainstream smoke- smoke that is exhaled by a smoker. Passive smoker- nonsmoker who breathes in secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke is also estimated to cause between 200,000 to 1 million asthma attacks each year.

5. Costs to the Unborn Child Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk that the baby will be born too soon and have developmental problems. ◦Babies born will have lower birth weights because of lack of oxygen.

6. Costs of Lost Productivity Productivity is a measure of how much a person is able to produce based on how much time he or she works. Loss of productivity because they are sick more often and get less done. Smoking costs the U.S. economy $80 billion per year in lost productivity.

7. Countering the Costs of Tobacco According to the CDCP, the cost of each pack of cigarettes sold in the U.S. is more than$7 in medical care. A ban on the manufacture and sale of tobacco products have been proposed. ◦People claim it would interfere with their constitutional rights. Another proposal is to increase the amount of tax on cigarettes. ◦This would give more money to educate people about the dangers of tobacco. ◦Look at page 322.
