In a few sentences come up with your own explanation as to why ice floats on water. FTF (Turn in Skittles Lab!) WHY DOES ICE FLOAT ON WATER? Think-Pair-Share (1-2-2) Can you explain this? In a few sentences come up with your own explanation as to why ice floats on water. Homework: Eureka Density! TODAY IN SCIENCE CLASS – FTF Review & Discuss Density 2-Column Notes Calculating Density Practice Exit Ticket (Explain why ice floats on water) SWBAT Define density and use the formula for calculating density to find the density of a mystery liquid. UNIT 3: Metric System

2 COLUMN NOTES ALL OF THEM!

D ENSITY

The measure of how much mass is contained in a given volume

T HE FORMULA OF DENSITY IS : Density = Mass / Volume

F IGURE 5: C OMPARING D ENSITIES - I NFERRING : W HICH ITEM HAS THE GREATER DENSITY ? The bowling ball Since the bowling ball has a greater mass, it has a greater density, even though both balls have the same volume

D ENSITY Units of Density

W HY IS DENSITY EXPRESSED AS A COMBINATION OF TWO DIFFERENT UNITS ? Because density is actually made up of two other measurements – mass and volume – an objects density is expressed as a combination of two units Two Common Units for Density Grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³) Grams per milliliter (g/mL)

MATH PRACTICE: WHAT IS THE DENSITY OF A WOOD BLOCK WITH A VOLUME OF 125 CM³ AND A MASS OF 57 G? Density = mass / volume Density = 57 g / 125 cm³ Density = 0.46 g/ cm³

M ATH P RACTICE : W HAT IS THE DENSITY OF A LIQUID WITH A MASS OF 45 G AND A VOLUME OF 48 M L? Density = mass / volume Density = 45 g / 48 mL Density = 0.94 g/mL

D ENSITY Densities of Common Substances

T HE DENSITY OF A SUBSTANCE IS THE ______ FOR ALL SAMPLES OF THAT SUBSTANCE. Same

F IGURE 6: A PPLYING C ONCEPTS : H OW COULD YOU USE DENSITY TO DETERMINE WHETHER A BAR OF METAL IS PURE GOLD ? If the bar of gold has a density that is greater than or less than 19.3 g/cm³, then the sample is not pure gold. Densities of Some Common Substances SubstanceDensity (g/cm³) Air0.001 Ice0.9 Water1.0 Aluminum2.7 Gold19.3

A N OBJECT WILL FLOAT IF IT IS _____ _____ THAN A SURROUNDING LIQUID. Less dense

THINK ABOUT IT – WHEN DOES AN OBJECT SINK IN LIQUID? When it is more dense than the surrounding liquid.

READING CHECKPOINT (PAGE 53): WILL AN OBJECT WITH A DENSITY OF 0.7 G/CM³ FLOAT OR SINK IN WATER? An object that has a density of 0.7 g/cm³ will float in water (1 g/cm³) because it is less dense than water

TICKET OUT WHY DOES ICE FLOAT ON WATER? 1. Calculate the Density of Water and Ice Liquid water Mass = 100 g Volume = 100 mL Density = ? Ice Volume = 100 mL Mass = 92 g Density = ? 2. What is the formula for density? 3. Explain how floating is related to density. 4. Why does ice float on water (use data from question 1)

TODAY’S AGENDA 10/29 FTF (Homework Out Please!) 1. What is the formula for density? 2. What two common units are used for density? 3. A block of metal has a volume of 15.0 cm 3 and has a mass of 40.5 g. What is the density? 4. Use the table below to determine what metal it is? FTF (Homework Out Please!) 1. What is the formula for density? 2. What two common units are used for density? 3. A block of metal has a volume of 15.0 cm 3 and has a mass of 40.5 g. What is the density? 4. Use the table below to determine what metal it is? Homework: Density Calculations Worksheet and Complete Tower Lab (if not completed in class) ! 20 DENSITY It doesn’t matter what the volume or mass is, for any given substance the density will always be the same! That’s because density is a proportion of mass to volume. If a 1 cm3 piece of gold has a mass of 19.3 g what would the mass be of a 2 cm3 piece of gold? Calculate the Density for each.

DENSITY TOWER Complete Pre-Lab Questions Procedure Find the mass of an empty container (m1). Record. Find the mass of the mystery liquid (m2). Record. Calculate the mass of the liquid (m2-m1). Record. Record the volume of the liquid. Using the mass and volume, calculate the density of the liquid. Record density in table. Write the density on the white board table in the appropriate place. Complete Lab Questions #6 - #8. Now we pour them to see what happens!

WILT – TICKET OUT What was the most difficult part of the lab? What was the easiest part of the lab?

Mrs. Dean uses the water displacement method to calculate the volume of a rock. The initial volume in the graduated cylinder is 50 mL and after immersing the rock it rises to 500 mL. The mass is calculated to be 1350 g. What is the density? D = m = v =
