1 What is ASMA ? ASMA contest is conducted by American Scholastic Mathematics Association (ASMA). This is 33rd year of the competition Creative mathematicians design each contest Contests and questions are challenging and sensitive to the level of ability of contemporary secondary school students. Model is unique, 6 chances in 6 months, Like a marathon, not a sprint Think about Indy race, same drivers, different dates, different terrain…

2 ASMA ASMA is head quartered in NY

Students will have to review the course material before they attend this class Teacher will not go through the entire syllabus. These are review sessions Teacher will go through the past question paper and solutions Students will get help with topics they find difficult.

8 Exam strategies Relax – this is a simple test
Prepare – you have enough materials….prepare for few hours, solve past questions, ask doubts, we are available on and on net Engage – collaborate, form study group, math club Art of problem solving – solve problem, not apply formula Think, enjoy

9 Exam strategies Few strategies Simplify the problem
Reflect on successes: Start with problems that are similar to the one you face, but even think about others that have nothing to do with your current problem. Think about the strategies you used to solve those problems, and you might stumble on the solution. Ask for help Start early

10 Results The exam starts in October and ends in March. There will be one contest every month. Final marks will be the average of all six contest Difficulty level is different for each exam. Some exams can be easy and some hard. Certificates will be awarded after 6-8 weeks on completion of the exam.

11 One sample Junior question
One shepherd, Paul, said to another, Jason. “Give me eight sheep and we'll have an equal number.” Jason answered, “No, you give me eight sheep and then I will have twice as many as you.” How many sheep did each shepherd have?

12 Sample question answer
Let S = no of sheep Paul has and T = no of sheep Jason has From Paul's statement S+8 = T-8 or S = T-16 From Jason's statement (S-8) 2 = T + 8 Substituting (T-16-8) 2 = T + 8 2T – 48 = T + 8 T = 56 Then S = 40 Paul had 40 and Jason 56.

13 Sample Senior contest question
N years ago Alice was twice as old as Bill was then. If Bill is now 30 years old, how old is Alice in terms of N?

14 Sample Senior question answer
A – N= 2(B – N) B=30 A – N = 60-2N A=60-N
