Distribution Patterns of Plant Branches REU-China Program By: Dustin Mielke Summer 2012 St. Cloud state University

Overview 概观  My Research  Question  Process  Data  Analysis  My Experiences  My impressions of china  Places we visited  我的研究  问题  过程  数据  分析  我的经验  我对中国的印象  我们参观的地方

Question 问题  Do different species of trees follow the same mechanisms of growth in their branching patterns?  Evolution/Competition/Resource  不同品种的树木,后续增长或权力的法律在其分 支的模式相同的机制呢?

Background Information  Mechanisms of growth will be measured with a statistical analysis by assessing the power law.  “Power laws can characterize ecological patterns that repeat themselves over broad scales, so they are considered as general features of complex systems” (Brown et al. 2002).

Procedure Data was collected from trees at a tree plantation (Yellow sea forest garden) Trees were selected based on height and accessibility (Juvenile trees) The tree height was measured first Tree Branches were measured from top to bottom Bamboo tree data was measured in a previous experiment

Analysis 分析  My data shows that some individuals within the same species do not directly follow the same power law.  我的数据显示,即使在同一物种内个体不遵循 相同的功法。

Interpretation 解释 Ideas  Initial assumptions  Skinny and long branches  Bamboo growth method  Variance within species 思想  初步设想  细弱枝  竹子的生长方法  物种变异内
