Introduction to referencing We use referencing to highlight when you have used someone else’s work to support your ideas  You must reference if you quote someone directly  But also when you paraphrase (put into your own words) someone else’s work  And also when you use someone’s work to support your ideas Library and E-Learning

Citing, referencing, bibliography? What’s the difference?  A citation appears in the text –this can be a quote or paraphrasing  A reference of the source of the citation at the end of the work –this is the details of the book, journal, webpage, etc.  A bibliography is a list of other works you might have read, but not cited within your work –this is sometimes called a list of further reading Library and E-Learning

How do I make this easier for myself?  First off know which referencing style to use –We use UWS Harvard (not “normal” Harvard!) –OSCOLA for Law students –APA for Psychology students  Note the references and quotes you use as you go along and reference each idea your use – don’t try and do it all at the end!  Compare your referencing to the CoRE Library and E-Learning

E-Learning Short quote. Author editor with page number Three authors Four authors. Show first then et al. No publication date, no page numbers Corporate author, two references Long quote, offset from text, use page number(s) Secondary reference. Use semicolon to differentiate references. Use title and abbreviation if author and date not listed

Library and E-Learning

Hold on, I’ll never remember all that!  All of this is on the UWS Referencing Guide on Moodle –Services > Library > UWS Referencing Guide  Always use the CoRE as a reference point [pardon the pun]  Speak to the Library or Effective Learning Tutor Library and E-Learning

Tools and apps  SMILE will help you with academic study methods including referencing –see the Library and Effective Learning Moodle sites  For basic referencing help try RefME –https://www.refme.com  For advanced referencing try EndNote –available from the Library Moodle site Library and E-Learning
