2 Which student has diabetes?

3 What is Diabetes? Chronic disease Body does not make insulin or cannot use the insulin it makes

4 Taking care of diabetes is important! If not treated, diabetes can lead to serious health problems

5 Goal of Diabetes Management Balance food, activity and insulin or medication

6 Low and High Blood Sugar

7 High Blood Sugar Thirst Frequent bathroom breaks Increased fatigue

8 You Need To Know Low Blood Sugar =

9 What to look for in Low Blood Sugar Shaky Sweaty Hungry/Stomachache Irritable Dizzy Sleepy

10 Treatment for Low Blood Sugar - Treat on the spot - Treat with: 4 ounces (1/2 cup) fruit juice 8 ounces (1 cup) sport drink ½ can regular soda (not diet) 3 to 4 glucose tablets 1 tube glucose gel Call for help Do not send student anywhere alone

11 If not treated, a blood sugar will continue to drop

12 SEVERE Low Blood Sugar = EMERGENCY Cannot swallow Seizures or convulsions Unconscious

13 ACT NOW! Remain calm Lay the student on the floor and turn on side Call 911 Call your school nurse

14 Diabetes Management in School ALL students with diabetes will need help with Emergency Care

15 Students with Diabetes Need: Blood sugar checks Meals and snacks on time Juice for low blood sugar - if not able to swallow, call 911 Extra water and bathroom breaks for high blood sugar To be involved in activities like any other student
