Faces of Fear: Change Numbers 13-14 John 15:1-11

Faces of Fear: Change The Domino Effect A cumulative effect produced when one event sets off a chain of similar events

Numbers 13:17-14:4 17 Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them, “Go up into the Negeb and go up into the hill country, 18 and see what the land is, and whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many, Faces of Fear: Change

Numbers 13:17-14:4 19 and whether the land that they dwell in is good or bad, and whether the cities that they dwell in are camps or strongholds, Faces of Fear: Change

Numbers 13:17-14:4 20 and whether the land is rich or poor, and whether there are trees in it or not. Be of good courage and bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes. Faces of Fear: Change

Numbers 13:17-14:4 21 So they went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, near Lebo- hamath. Faces of Fear: Change

Numbers 13:17-14:4 22 They went up into the Negeb and came to Hebron. Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, were there. (Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) Faces of Fear: Change

Numbers 13:17-14:4 23 And they came to the Valley of Eshcol and cut down from there a branch with a single cluster of grapes, and they carried it on a pole between two of them; they also brought some pomegranates and figs. Faces of Fear: Change

Numbers 13:17-14:4 24 That place was called the Valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster that the people of Israel cut down from there. 25 At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land. Faces of Fear: Change

Numbers 13:17-14:4 26 And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the people of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. Faces of Fear: Change

Numbers 13:17-14:4 27 And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. Faces of Fear: Change

Numbers 13:17-14:4 29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan.” Faces of Fear: Change

Numbers 13:17-14:4 30 But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” 31 Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.” Faces of Fear: Change

Numbers 13:17-14:4 32 So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. Faces of Fear: Change

Numbers 13:17-14:4 33 And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.” Faces of Fear: Change

Numbers 13:17-14:4 14:1 Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night. 2 And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness! Faces of Fear: Change

Numbers 13:17-14:4 3 Why is the L ORD bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?” 4 And they said to one another, “Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt.” Faces of Fear: Change

The FEAR of Change Creates… We create excuses (Num 13:28-29) We exaggerate the problem (Num 13:31-33) We lose sight of God’s plan and purpose (Num 13:32-33) We grumble (Num 14:2) We take matters into our own hands (Num 14:4)

Numbers 14:5-10 5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel. 6 And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes Faces of Fear: Change

Numbers 14:5-10 7 and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land. 8 If the L ORD delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey. Faces of Fear: Change

Numbers 14:5-10 9 Only do not rebel against the L ORD. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the L ORD is with us; do not fear them.” Faces of Fear: Change

Numbers 14:5-10 10 Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But the glory of the L ORD appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel. Faces of Fear: Change

Consequences of the FEAR of Change Shame Inferiority No Creativity Withdraw from others MOST IMPORTANTLY Missing out on the blessings of the Lord (Num 14:12, 21-23)

Numbers 14:12,21-23 12 I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they. Faces of Fear: Change

Numbers 14:12,21-23 21 But truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the L ORD, 22 none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ten times and have not obeyed my voice, Faces of Fear: Change

Numbers 14:12,21-23 23 shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it. Faces of Fear: Change

Root Issues Pride Insecurity

John 15:1-11 1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Faces of Fear: Change

John 15:1-11 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. Faces of Fear: Change

John 15:1-11 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. Faces of Fear: Change

John 15:1-11 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. Faces of Fear: Change

John 15:1-11 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. Faces of Fear: Change

John 15:1-11 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. Faces of Fear: Change

How do you know when to run from change or embrace it? The change must be motivated by Christ, not for Christ (v.4-5) The change can further express God’s glory. (v.7-8)

Faces of Fear: Change How do you know when to run from change or embrace it? The change will not contradict God’s Word (v.10)

Faces of Fear: Change Take-aways… 1.Change if a result of exchange 2.Change always leads to transformation 3.Change means pruning off the old and letting new growth take root.
