GIS-Based Suitability Analysis for a LEED-Neighborhood Development Former United States Army Installation at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey Jason Torres, GISP email@example.com Advisor – Timothy Murtha, PhD Capstone Proposal – GEOG 596A May 8, 2013
U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Non-profit organization Main Goal – “Changing the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated” (USGBC) Main Program – Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Voluntary Program for green building LEED Rating Systems New Construction Existing Buildings Operation and Maintenance Commercial Interiors Schools Homes Neighborhood Development Core Principles Sustainable Sites Water Efficiency Energy & Atmosphere Materials & Resources Indoor Environmental Quality
LEED-Neighborhood Development LEED-ND “LEED for Neighborhood Development integrates the principles of smart growth, urbanism and green building into the first national system for neighborhood design” (USGBC) created with the Congress for the New Urbanism, USGBC and the National Resource Defense Council. Rating System based on Credits Smart location & Linkage – 27 credits Neighborhood Pattern & Design – 44 credits Green Infrastructure & Building – 29 credits Innovation in Design/Operations 6 credits Credits are awarded if they pass the prerequisites for each category which could lead to being awarded LEED-ND Certification Certified – 40 to 49 credits Silver 50 to 59 credits Gold 60 to 79 credits Platinum – 80+ credits
Fort Monmouth - Background U.S. Army installation, established in 1925 and operated until 2011. Suitability Analysis Using GIS GIS Analysis of LEED-ND Scorecard Smart Location & Linkage Neighborhood Pattern and Design “GeoDesign is a set of techniques and enabling technologies for planning built and natural environments in an integrated process, including project conceptualization, analysis, design specification, stakeholder participation and collaboration, design creation, simulation, and evaluation (among other stages).(Wikipedia, 2013)”builtnatural environments
SLLp5 – Floodplain Avoidance (Required) Required Layers Installation Boundaries Water Bodies FEMA Flood Maps (online WMSE Service) GIS Analysis – I will do a basic visual analysis to review this prerequisite.
NPDc6 – Street Network (2 Credits) Required Layers Installation Boundaries Street Network GIS Analysis – I will use the intersect tool to create points at all road intersections to calculate the total number of intersections.
NPDc15 – Neighborhood Schools (1 credit) Required Layers Installation Boundaries Schools (Public & Private) GIS Analysis – I will run a buffer analysis to identify schools within the buffer zone.
Data Acquisition Three Main Sources of GIS Data New Jersey Geographic Information Network https://njgin.state.nj.us/ Monmouth County, GIS Office http://www.visitmonmouth.com/ Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority http://www.fortmonmouthredevelopment.com/
Expectations/Potential Issues Technical Issues Basic understand of LEED-ND Does LEED-ND apply in my study area Data Issues Does the data meet the needs of the project Are there any issues with the data layers Final Map would try to identify area where a LEED-ND development can be established.
Timeline I’ll be submitting an article to the Journal of American Planning Association
