1 Monday 2/23 RAP In your opinion, should the US be getting involved in WWII? Explain. Today: Presentation of Pearl Harbor Work on Ch and maps Take notes and discuss Pearl Harbor Tuesday: -- --Watch video—Pearl Harbor—clip –40 minutes Objective: SWBAT describe the Battle of Britain by taking notes on the reading and pictures of the battle being described by the presenters. SWBAT discuss and analyze articles written on Pearl Harbor and President Roosevelt. By reading and discussing these articles students will understand different views on what the U.S. should have or should not have done to prevent the attack on Pearl Harbor. Along with what President Roosevelt may have or may not have known about the upcoming attack.

What the United States and the President actually knew about the up coming attack and what, if anything, could have been done to avoid the attack.

Read through the articles with the person next to you. “Terminate Trade with Japan” by Dell Hall “Negotiate with Japan” by Henry David After reading through the articles, write a brief response that agrees with one of the articles. Support your writing with information from the article you are agreeing with. Discuss

12 Japan July 1940, Japan announced a plan for the future of Asia called the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.—Japanese empire. September 27th, 1940, Japan makes an alliance with Germany and Italy. The Rome-Berlin-Tokyo Axis = Axis Powers U.S responds with economic pressure. An embargo which includes aviation fuel, all metals, chemicals, machine parts, and other products with military uses. Japan seizes control of the rest of Indochina by July of 1941. Roosevelt freezes all Japanese assets in the U.S. and ends trade with Japan. But we continue to negotiate with Japan.

As a class we will read and discuss the Presidents message to the Emperor. This message was transmitted as a telegram Dec. 6, 1941, 9 p.m. What do you think? Did the President wait too long? The next morning– Around 8 a.m. Pearl Harbor was being attacked.
