2
Investigating Linear Functions Point-Slope form – Finish WS Start Applications Progress reporting period ends Friday, 3/6/2015 Work must be done before Thursday, to reflect on progress report. Spring Break – 3/16-3/20
3
There is no bell ringer. Finish Point slope worksheet.
4
There are 3 different forms of linear equations Slope-intercept form - ___________________ Standard form - ___________________ Point-slope form - ___________________ So, what do we do with all of these forms
5
Over the weekend, Officer Rodriguez was on patrol looking for speeding violators. She discovered that many of her students in this very class are fast drivers.
6
The fine for speeding on the highways of most states is a function of the speed of the car. The speeding fine can be determined by a linear equation; where f represents the fine in dollars and m represents the number of miles per hour the car is EXCEEDING the speed limit.
7
Turn over your ticket. What is the fine for speeding in Texas? $85.00 plus (+) $5.00 per mile over the posted speed limit. If in a School Zone or Construction/Maintenance Zone, (with workers present) $85.00 plus (+) $9.00 per mile over the posted speed limit. All other offenses in a Construction/Maintenance Zone, (with workers present) the fine is $185.00.
8
Linear equations have 2 variables remember Independent (x) – what happens first Dependent (y) – what happens second Going back to our problem, which is independent, which is dependent?

Linear equations have 2 variables remember Independent (x) – Speeding Dependent (y) – fine The problem also states, m is the number of miles per hour the car is exceeding the speed limit. So…..
11
Dependent variable, represented by f(the fine in dollars) Independent Variable, represented by m(the number of miles per hour the car is exceeding. (remember it is what changes) Slope, represented by speeding charge per mile. (Remember slope is what stays the same/constant.) b=y-intercept, which represents the base price/starting point. (what is the lowest speeding ticket you can get)
12
M (mph exceeding) Linear Equation f=9x+85F (fine)(M,F)
13
Don’t forget… Label, x-axis and y-axis Discrete or continues? Domain? Range?
