2 Corinthians 3:18

 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. (KJV)  But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit. (NASB)

 While the potential of spiritual transformation is open to all, true disciples exhibit open and honest hearts (Luke 8:15; cf. Jer. 31:33), not like unbelievers, whose minds are hardened and whose eyes are veiled (John 12:37-43; Heb. 3:7-15).

 Sacred Scripture is like a mirror, reflecting the mind of God and revealing the heart of man (1 Cor. 13:8- 12; Heb. 4:12-13; James 1:21-25).  The power of God’s word, proclaimed in its purity and simplicity, starkly contrasts with the corrupt perversions of men (Jer. 23:25-32; 2 Cor. 2:17; 4:1-2).

 The Greek word metamorpho ō, translated “transformed,” occurring 4x in the NT, means “to change in a manner visible to others, i.e., be transfigured” (Matt. 17:2; Mark 9:2), or “to change inwardly in fundamental character or condition, i.e., be changed or transformed” (Rom. 12:2; 2 Cor. 3:18). Faithful Christians undergo a dramatic spiritual transformation (Rom. 8:28-30; 13:11-14).

 The expression, “just as from the Lord, the Spirit,” affirms that Jesus, possessor of the divine Spirit, works in perfect harmony with the other members of the Godhead to accomplish man’s salvation and spiritual transformation (John 1:1-3; 14:8-10; 16:12- 15).

 Taking advantage of the provision that God has made for our spiritual growth, may we be willing to undergo such a transformation of life and soul (Eph. 4:11-16; 1 Pet. 2:1-3).
