Types of Links Secondary 3 ST

Links Help connect two or more parts of a technical object Linking is the basic mechanical function provided by any component that links an object’s parts or parts of different objects A linking component is one that has the basic mechanical function of linking

Types of Links

1.Fixed (embedding) 2.Rotating (pivot) 3.Sliding 4.Sliding rotating (sliding + pivot) 5.Spherical (ball joint) 6.Helical 7.Support base link

Words To Know: 1.Translational: – Back and forth movement – It CAN move back and forth: – It CANNOT move back and forth: 2.Rotational – Rotating movement – It CAN rotate: – It CANNOT rotate:

Fixed link (a.k.a. embedded link) There is no movement between linked parts Screen & case

Red arrows indicate no translation or rotation Fixed link (a.k.a. embedded link)

Rotating link (a.k.a. pivot link) The guided part can undergo rotational motion around one axis Door Hinge

Rotating link (a.k.a. pivot link)

Sliding link The guided part can undergo translational motion along one axis Drawer Slides

Sliding rotating link (a.k.a. sliding pivot) The guided part can undergo rotational and translational motion on the same axis, separately (independently) Seat post & seat tube

Sliding rotating link (a.k.a. sliding pivot)

Spherical link (a.k.a. ball joint) The guided part can undergo rotational motion in many directions Joystick

Spherical link (a.k.a. ball joint)

Helical link The guided part can undergo helical motion. Unlike sliding-rotating link, during helical motion a part must rotate AND translate (move back/ forth) at the same time) Nut and bolt

Helical link

Support Base Link Can undergo movement parallel to the support base only Computer Mouse

Graphical Language Symbols (related to guidance and linking)
