Indefinite Articles We have already reviewed the definite articles EL, LA, LOS and LAS that mean ¨the¨and correspond to a masculine, femenine, or plural nouns. If you are not referring to a SPECIFIC noun, you will want to use A or AN in front of the noun. The corresponding Spanish words for these are… –Un (masculine noun) –Una (femenine noun) –Unos (masculine plural nouns) –Unas (femenine plural nouns) –EX… La casa refers to a specific house. Una casa could be a house, any house. –The ¨partners¨are… –El….Un –La…Una –Los…Unos –Las…Unas
Verbos (AR) We already know that verbs are action words. Verbs in Spanish are divided into one of 3 groups depending on their last two letters. AR verbs are the most common verbs. Some of the AR verbs you learned last year were… –Comprar –Entrar –Contestar –Escuchar –Visitar –Caminar –Estudiar –Completar –Bailar –Sacar –Levantar –Llegar –Trabajar –Cantar –Preguntar
More verbs…. Because verbs are not usually used in their whole (infinitive) form, you must learn how to CONJUGATE them. Conjugation is the process of changing the spelling of a verb so that it matches the subject (who) is doing the action. Verbs have two parts…the AR ending, and all the letters that come before it, the STEM.
Conjugation In order to correctly conjugate any verb, you must know two things…who the subject is (who is doing the action), and what is the new ending you must give the verb to match that subject. There are 6 possible people, subjects, or groups that are used when you conjugate a verb in Spanish. They are.. –Yo…..I –Tú…..you (familiar) –Él……he Ella…..she Usted…..you (formal) –Nosotros…we –Vosotros…yáll (you guys informal) –Ellos…those boys….Ellas….those girls….Ustedes….You guys –NOTICE THAT THERE ARE TWO GROUPS WITH 3 PEOPLE IN THEM…THIS IS HOW WE ARRIVE AT ONLY 6 GROUPS.
Subjects and endings Once you know which subject you are using, you can match it with the appropriate ending, which will replace the original AR. Just like there are 6 possible subject groups, there are 6 possible new endings. –If YO is the subject, replace the AR with O –If Tú is the subject, replace the AR with AS –If él, ella, or Usted is the subject, replace the AR with A –If Nosotros is the subject, replace the AR with AMOS –If Vosotros is the subject, replace the AR with áis –If ellos, ellas, or Ustedes is the subject, replace the AR with AN.
Conjugation Practice Give the correct endings for these stems based on the subject given…. Yo compr…. Ella escuch… Ellos cant… Nosotros bail… Tú levant…. The correct endings are… –Compro –Escucha –Cantan –Bailamos –Levantas
