Serving Sizes

Menu Changes Menu changes, including those due to cooking projects, must meet all CACFP guidelines and must be approved in advance by the director. Menu changes must be posted for parents to view.

Family Style Service Family style meal service is used to promote a pleasant eating environment that will make mealtime a learning experience for children. There must be an adult supervising each table. Each supervisor should encourage children to eat the full recommended servings and food components presented.

Food Allergies Children with food allergies must have a Food Allergy Action Plan filled out by their physician. It must be on file here at ECEC at all times. Proper medications and plans of action are included incase there happens to be an incident. Food allergies should be posted in the kitchen and classrooms. If you are unsure if a child can have a food, ask. Depending on the severity, extra precautions may need to be taken. For example, extra sanitation may be required so cross contamination on surfaces is not a possibility.

Introducing New Foods Previously mentioned, children often imitate adults. When a new/adjusted food item is being introduced, you should always welcome it and taste it once regardless of personal preference. Often, children need to be offered a new food around 3 to 5 times before they start to enjoy it more. If you are supportive and try it with them, they are more likely to give the new food a try. ECEC may serve the only fully balanced and healthy meal a child receives, so it is important that they learn to like nutritious food. They may also positively impact their family and friends too.

Hand washing Washing your hands is the single most effective way to stop the spread of illness and disease. Hands must be washed before and after serving meals, toileting, wiping your nose or coughing into your hands, bathing/feeding/changing children, and handling bodily fluids. Children should wash their hands when coming in contact with anything mentioned above. But they should also wash their hands after play time outside or inside, after sensory time, and when they get dropped off and picked up. Proper hand washing includes: Adult turns on warm water and children should use plenty of soap, lather for at least 20 seconds and make sure to scrub wrists and under finger nails. Make sure to turn off the faucet with a paper towel.

Sanitation Make sure bottles are properly labeled and stored out of children’s reach. Tables should be cleaned at the beginning and end of every day, before and after meal time, and before and after play time. Children and food should not be around/on table while you are sanitizing them. Make sure paper towel is clean and to properly dispose of them after use. Step 1: Remove Debris Step 2: Put soapy water solution on table and dry off with paper towel. Step 3: Spray sanitizer on table and allow it 60 seconds to sit. Dry off with paper towel.
