EBooks and Interlibrary loan Is there a role of ILL/DD in Digital age?

Survey conducted in May 2014 aimed at finding out if ILL/DD would still be important in an eBook world Are libraries able to find what their client’s need and where – libraries, publishers etc.? What sources are libraries using and where are they? What access do libraries think they’ll need in 5, 10 years time?

Key findings Overseas vendors dominate eBook supply Australian content is not as readily available 80% believe ILL/DD will be important eBook licences vary enormously Majority are unable to provide ILL/DD access Majority of ILL practioners are concerned about affordability and licencing restrictions Some ILL practioners believe Purchase on demand and consortia will offset the need for ILL/DD

Who Participated? 119 responses from national, state and territory, university, special, TAFE etc. 72 responses from Public libraries in a separate survey. Good response rate from collecting institutions, university and special libraries

Libraries and eBooks 72% purchased or licenced eBooks 28% do not have eBook collections 50% source from a mix of overseas/Australian suppliers 43% source from mainly overseas 7% mainly from Australian

Satisfaction with eBook choices

Need for ILL/DD - importance Insert fig 7 and 9 Now – 43% In 5 years time – 80%

Why ILL/DD from eBooks is unimportant We prefer (and can afford) to purchase on demand, buying the content our users need Users prefer the print version We are self sufficient or use DD for chapters Belonging to consortia increases the range of material available and reduces the need for ILL

Public Libraries report - Importance Insert fig 13 and 14. Now – 86.8% In 5 years time – 60.4%

Licencing, restrictions and future concerns Insert fig 11
