TIQA Method: Topic Sentence, Introduction, Quotation, Analysis Topic sentence: Tell the reader what your paragraph is trying to explain or prove. Introducing quotation: Put the quote into context by explaining who says it, and/or when it happens, etc. Don’t just ‘Leave it Hanging’ on the paper. Quotation: Write out the quotation you are using. Analyze: Explain to the reader the importance of the quotation and how it supports your topic sentence. Don’t say “this quotation shows” or similar phrases TRANSITION WORD OR PHRASE leading into the next body paragraph

TIQA Method Example: Topic Sentence, Introduction, Quotation, Analysis Topic sentence: In Night by Elie Wiesel, the narrator transforms from a very devout, religious boy to a young man who has lost his faith completely. Introduce quotation: As Elie remembers the horrifying deaths of children he saw at the entrance to Auschwitz, his anger and despair cause him to write, Quotation: “Never shall I forget that sight which murdered my faith and my God forever” (70). Analyze: Elie cannot believe in or respect a God who would let such a terrible crime happen. He feels as though his faith and his image of God have been murdered and burned just like the poor children in the ditch.
