Chapter 10: Light and Reflection The phosphorescence of algae in the Salton Sea in California.

Lesson outline What is light? - wavelength - electromagnetic (EM) spectrum - visible light Types of light (Incandescent, Fluorescent, Infrared, Ultra violet, anymore?)

What is light? Light is a form of an electromagnetic (EM) wave. EM waves are moving electric and magnetic fields. EM waves invisible and can travel through a vacuum.

Label a wave!

Electromagnetic Spectrum

Hot and cold! Incandescence - light emitted from a hot object Luminescence - light emitted from an absence of heat

Forms of Luminescence Fluorescence Phosphorescence Chemiluminescence Bioluminescence

Fluorescence 1) Excited mercury atoms emits UV light. 2) Phosphor coating on the tube absorbs UV light and emits visible light. What disposal problem would occur with fluorescent light bulbs? Light that is emitted due to exposure of UV light.

Uses of fluorescent light

Phosphorescence Light that is emitted due to exposure of UV. Light will continue to be emitted even after UV light is removed.

Chemiluminescence Light produced by a chemical reaction.

Bioluminescence Light produced by a reaction in a living organism

Summary 1.Incandescence is light that is emitted from an object because the object is very ______. 2.Luminescence is light that is emitted in the absence of ______. 3.___________, ___________, ___________, and ___________, are all forms of luminescence. 4.Light is transmitted in the form of ___________ waves. 5.Visible light makes up only a _______ part of the EM spectrum. 6.Fluorescent light source is better because it has _________ light output, _________ energy usage, and _________ lifetime than incandescent light. 7.Luminescence can be used for a variety of purposes such as: _____________________ and ___________________.

BIG Ideas in the OPTICS unit Light has characteristics and properties that can be manipulated with mirrors and lenses for a range of uses. Society has benefited from the development of a range of optical devices and technologies.
