57 HP Pads and QR Codes Share the HP Pads with your partner; do not use for any purpose other than reading QR codes. QR Codes are basically square barcodes that contain information or links to information. Today we will use them to check and/or improve our work. To scan a QR Code: Open the HP Apps (arrow pointing up in bottom right) Open the QR offline Decoder Select Live Capture; this will take pictures until it detects a QR code (make sure the sound is off) Once a QR code is detected, it will display either text or a link to follow at the bottom When finished, close all the windows by hitting the home button and dragging them to the top.

58 Navigating Text Structures Today we will be looking at how the structure of a text helps a reader understand the content. The articles will be based on our unit theme of survival and are taken from a survival handbook.

59 Navigating Text Structures The colored folders represent the four different stations. There are two of each station. Folders and articles need to stay on the desks they start on. There will only be 10 minutes at each stations, so stay on task! When switching stations, move clockwise.

60 Navigating Text Structures 1.Read the text closely and quietly. 2.Decide which text structure on the guide matches the text. Write the title of the text on that page. 3.Scan the QR code on the front inside cover of the station folder to check the answer.. 4.Complete the graphic organizer to break down the text structure. 5.Clue words: there are at least three! 6.Quotes: choose quotes with clue words!

63 Model ERQ In the article about about the great fire in Chicago, the author uses a chronological text structure. The chronological order of the text helps the reader understand the order of events during this great Chicago catastrophe. The article states that, “ In another 3 hours, there were fires all over Chicago.” The phrase “another 3 hours” helps the reader understand how quickly the fire spread after beginning. In another example, the article states, “It would be the next day before the fire would be completely out.” By using the chronological words of “the next day”, the reader learns how long it was before the fire were stopped.
