Production Technology (IND 006) Preparatory Year, Faculty of Engineering, Fayoum University Dr. Ahmed Salah Abou Taleb Lecturer, Industrial Engineering Dept., Faculty of Engineering, Fayoum University Lecture No. 2

What is manufacturing? Literal: Manufacture = Manus (hand) + Factures (make)  Made by hand Technological:Application of physical and chemical processes to make parts or products, including assembly of products. Economical:Transformation of materials into items of greater value by means of processing and/or assembly operations. CIRP definition:Design + production + assembly (CIRP = International Academy for Production Eng.)

Manufacturing in Technology Way

Manufacturing in Economical Way

Manufacturing Technology Definition Manufacturing technology is a field of study, which is focused on improving manufacturing processes, equipment or technique in order to reduce costs and enhance reliability. It provides the tools which enables production of all processed goods..

Importance of manufacturing Manufacturing is an important mean to create material wealth!!! One job in a manufacturing plant generates about four other jobs else!!! Question: How? Data from the USA: - Manufacturing : ~ 20% of the GNP - Agriculture, mining: < 5% of the GNP - Construction, public utilities : ~ 5% of the GNP - Service sector : ~ 70% of the GNP (GNP = Gross National Product) Question: What are the figures for Yemen?..

Manufacturing Process Selection Product quality. Equipment & tooling cost. Material cost. Material vs. process. Processing time. Labor. Energy consumption. Surface finish. Process waste and material recycling.. Factors affecting the selection of manufacturing processes:

A bottle of water How many component in it? Four components (bottle, cap, label, water) -How do we select the best material for each component? -How are each of these manufactured? - What does the equipment cost? Motivation (1)

Motivation (2) Approx. 15 components - How do we select the best material for each component? - How are each of these manufactured? Stapler How many component on it? Car: ~ 15,000 parts; Boeing 747 plane: ~6 million parts Intel core 2 duo processor: 65 nm feature size, 291 million transistors

Production Process It is the process followed in a plant for converting semi-finished products or raw materials into finished products. The art of converting raw material into finished goods with application of different types of tools, machines, manufacturing set ups and manufacturing processes is known as production.
