Problem Booklet Sample Problem I OPENING SCENE A volleyball player has injured her left ankle during practice. You have completed your evaluation, and you suspect a moderate second-degree lateral ankle sprain. Section A With the information you now have, what action(s) would you take to manage this condition? (Choose the actions that you believe are essential to the resolution of the situation.) Answer Booklet Sample Problem I 1.Tape the ankle securely and see if the athlete can finish. 2.Apply ice to the left ankle. 3.Have the athlete walk the injury off. 4.Write a note to excuse the athlete from classes tomorrow. 5.Apply a compression wrap to the injured ankle. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. The amount of swelling has increased since you evaluated the injury, and the athlete cannot bear weight without pain. Indicate your actions at this time. The physician does not apply a splint or cast but instructs the athlete to continue using crutches as long as the weight bearing causes pain. The physician refers the athlete back to you for follow-up management. With the information you now have, what action(s) will you take? 9.Instruct the athlete to continue the ice treatments for the rest of the day until she goes to sleep. 10.Instruct the athlete to use a heating pad on her ankle while she sleeps. 11.Instruct the athlete to call the coach to tell her what the doctor said. 12Instruct the athlete to take OTC NSAIDs. 5 © BOC 2004 The item by item weighting scale is as follows: >CI = Clearly Indicated (you must do it). These are items that are essential in solving the problem and/or failure to take such action has the potential for causing harm. CI’s are essential because competent ATCs would certainly perform the action in a real-life situation. >I = Indicated (it is Ok to do it). These are decisions that will help in solving the problem but are not absolutely essential and failure to take such action does not pose a significant threat of causing harm. >N = Neutral (it does not matter whether you do it or not). These actions could be taken or not without consequence. >C = Contraindicated (you should avoid doing it). These are decisions that are improper and will interfere with solving the problem, but do not pose a significant threat of causing harm. >CC = Clearly Contraindicated (you must avoid doing it).
