NDT / Bobath Introductory & Advanced Courses in the Management of Individuals with Hemiplegia   8th-10th September 2015 Introductory Course 16th-20th September 2015 Advanced Course NDT Tutors Cathy Hazzard, MBA, B.Sc.P.T. Karen Brunton, B.Sc.P.T. Beaumont and Connolly Hospitals are coming together to offer the above two courses. The introductory three-day course is designed to give participants basic knowledge about NDT while the advanced 5 day course will build on the 3 week certificate course information. Both are practical with a focus on how it is applied in clinical practice to promote recovery of function following neurological damage. 2 INSTRUCTORS CATHY HAZZARD MBA, B.Sc.P.T. is a Physiotherapist with over 25 years experience working with adults with varied neurological diagnoses. Her clinical background also includes experience and continuing education courses in manual therapy and orthopedics. She obtained an MBA in 1993 while continuing to work as a PT. She has been an NDTA™ Coordinator Instructor in Adult Hemiplegia since 1998 and has taught introductory, certificate and advanced level NDT courses extensively throughout North America and internationally in such countries as Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore, Estonia, Peru, Colombia, India, and Mexico. Cathy practiced in Calgary, Alberta, Canada for over 20 years in the acute, rehabilitation and outpatient phases of care. She is now working in private practice and Home Health on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Cathy has been an invited speaker at the NDTA™’s annual conferences in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2010, and She served as the Chair of the NDTA™’s Instructor Group from 2002 – 2005 and a member of the Board of Directors of NDTA™ from 2003 – She has written 2 articles for the Neurosciences Division’s journal, Synapse, of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association and an article for the NDTA™’s Network. She is one of 5 editors for the next NDTA book – currently in publication. KAREN BRUNTON B.Sc. PT, C/NDT is a Clinical Educator at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, University Health Network and has a Lecturer status appointment with the Department of Physical Therapy, University of Toronto. She has over 35 years experience working with clients with neurological impairments in acute, rehabilitation, long term care and outpatient settings. Karen has been an NDTA™ Coordinator Instructor in Adult Hemiplegia since 1991, Advanced Course Instructor since 1996 and an instructor with IBITA (International Bobath Instructor Training Association) since 1997. She has taught courses internationally and extensively throughout North America (Canada, United States and Mexico). In addition, she has presented on various topics at NDTA™ National Conference, Ontario Physiotherapy Conference and Canadian Physiotherapy Congress. 3 INTRODUCTION TO NDT COURSE ENQUIRIES TO
INTRODUCTORY COURSE INFORMATION This course provides a foundation for understanding the NDT/Bobath approach. The development of practical skills and knowledge is facilitated through hands-on experiential learning which can be easily transferred to daily practice. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Course participants will be able to: Understand the theoretical frameworks supporting the NDT Practice Model. Understand basic assessment and intervention concepts of NDT. Identify major impairments in the adult hemiplegic patient. Analyze normal and abnormal movement in functional activities. Utilize knowledge of NDT for making treatment choices related to impairments and activities. PARTICIPANTS: This course is open to Therapists (OT, PT, SLTs), Therapy Assistants, and other members of the Rehabilitation team, who work with stroke and brain-injured adults. It is highly recommended that team members attend together e.g. PT with OT colleagues and hospital with community colleagues, in order to maximise benefit from the training. LOCATION: Beaumont Hospital  COST  The fee for this three-day course is €300  Please pay by cheque/bank draft to OT Department, Beaumont Hospital.  This will include course reference materials and some refreshments during breaks. 5 ADVANCED NDT COURSE ENQUIRIES TO
ADVANCED COURSE INFORMATION Approved Advanced Handling and Problem Solving Course Including the ‘Arm and Leg Connection’ PARTICIPANTS: Participants must have completed an NDT/Bobath Certificate Course in the Treatment and Management of Adults with Hemiplegia or a Certificate Course in the Treatment and Management of Individuals with Cerebral Palsy as a prerequisite to this course. This five-day course is designed to broaden one’s knowledge base and enhance skills learned in the certificate course. An emphasis will be placed on enhancing participants’ assessment and handling skills. The patient practicum of the course will involve patients with a variety of acquired CNS lesions (stroke, traumatic brain injury, and ataxia if possible). COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to Utilize the ICF Enablement Model for patient evaluation and intervention planning Identify current concepts of postural control and movement. Analyze factors and identify impairments which interfere with the performance of functional activities; including those in the UE and in gait. Identify normal movement components and biomechanics of the UE. Identify components of normal gait and lower extremity biomechanics. Relate biomechanical gait components to impairments associated with neurological dysfunction. Synthesize information to develop and implement effective intervention strategies for persons with neurological dysfunction during patient practicum sessions. Participants will treat patients at least four of the five days of this course.
