Watered/Branching_out_activity Big Ideas Where does our water come from? How does rainfall become a river? How do ridges and valleys affect runoff? Where would you build a farm? Where would you build a city? Where does their water come from; where does it go? What happens to pollution?
Watered/Branching_out_activity Activity Summary (30 min) Some hydrologists study how water moves – who has learned about the water cycle? Today we will consider only rainfall and runoff over a mountain that you will make. Scientists sometimes build scale models to test their understanding of our complex world. Ask: Where does our water come from? Construction sequence follows How does rainfall become a river? It flows down and comes together Show Watershed Visualization – Module 2 – What is a watershedModule 2 How do ridges and valleys affect runoff? Flows away from / toward Where would you build a farm? Where would you get water for plants? Where would you build a city? –Where does their water come from; Where does it go? What happens to pollution? If the city builds a dump; if the farmer uses chemicals; if a mine dumps waste into a river valley? Put a red dot near the city, the farm, the mine to represent a source of contamination. What happens to the contaminated ground when it rains? Reference: Project WET – Branching Out; Salmon & Steelhead, Unit Activities for Educators, 6 – Defining our watershed
Watered/Branching_out_activity Arruga el papel para fomar una bolita 1 Crumple the paper into a ball
Watered/Branching_out_activity Unfold and create valleys and mountains. Tape corners to the orange paper. Extiende el papel y crea valles y montaÑtas. Pega las esquinas al papel naranja con cinta pegante. 2
Watered/Branching_out_activity Use the markers to color: rivers, ridges, farms, mines and cities 3 Usa los marcadores para colorear: rios, divisorias, fincas y ciudades.
Watered/Branching_out_activity Outside: Spray with water, watch what happens to the water! Rocea con agua y mira lo que pasa! 4
