1 Clay sculptures

2 What is a sculpture? Figure or design created in 3 dimensions Medium
Clay Paper Marble Ice Cheese?

3 Art Elements Can you name all 5? What defines an object in space?
Shape or Form (create candle ring) What is a moving dot? Line (add designs) What adds value and intensity? Color (give designs intensity) What gives tactile clues? Texture (make it tactile- smooth, bumpy, etchings) What shows distance between foreground and background? Space

4 Shape & Form Shape and form define objects in space.
Shape has only height and width has two dimensions–height and width usually defined by lines. Forms exist in three dimensions have height, width, and depth. can be seen from more than one side Are the basis of sculpture, furniture, and decorative arts.

5 Clay What is it? Clay is made of very small (sand-sized) pieces of rock that stick together.  Clay can be found in abundance all around the world. There are 2 basic types of clay: Kiln-Fired (red and white) Air-dry (white or colored)

6 Air Dry Clay Air-dry clays are easier to shape with your hands.
They are made of small pieces of earth or paper. With this kind of clay you can also add more pieces of clay to your project after it is completely dry!  Best of all this clay dries solid and you don't need a kiln to fire the piece dry. Cannot be glazed, only painted. To get the shine of a glaze you have to add a special shiny clear paint.

7 Kiln Fired Clay (Part 1) GREENWARE. When clay is wet, it is easy to mold and form. As it dries the water in the clay evaporates and the clay hardens. KILN. Firing is the term for heating the clay in the kiln. BISQUE. Clay which has been fired once, without glaze. KILN GREENWARE BISQUE

8 What is a Kiln? A Super HOT Oven! The heat from the kiln causes the water to evaporate from the clay, and the clay becomes hard.

9 How hot is it inside the kiln?
about 2000 degrees!!! How hot is an oven baking cookies? 350 degrees farenheit How hot is a summer heatwave? about 100 degrees farenheit How warm is this room? 70 degrees farenheit

10 Kiln Fired Clay (Part 2) Take Home!
GLAZE. Glaze is the paint used to color clay projects. There are small particles of silica in our colorful glazes, when they are heated in the kiln they will melt and transform into glass! KILN. Firing is the term for heating the clay in the kiln. Take Home!

11 Can you Score? SCORE. Making marks in the clay to join 2 pieces together. Use a bamboo skewer. Draw tic-tac-toe boards. Don’t push too hard! Use a small amount of water to help.
