1 Key Features of the Reading Process Alison Goldstein

2 Prereading  Activate or build background knowledge  Connect to prior personal and literary experience  Determine a purpose for reading  Make predictions or anticipate the overall organization of the text  Preview the text

3 Reading  Reading is a complex transaction-a- meaning making process in which the reader negotiates meaning in order to comprehend or create an interpretation.

4 Responding  Readers respond to the reading in order to deepen their comprehension. This is a tentative and exploratory explanation, but it is important to clarify and elaborate on their thinking about the text.  Response can take many forms: brainstorming, journal writing, small and whole group discussions

5 Exploring  Reader go back to the text to explore it more analytically.  The activities at this stage require readers to reread parts of the text

6 Applying  Readers deepen their interpretations and reflect on their understanding as they create a wide variety of writing, acting, visual, speaking and research projects.
