2 AWARDS AND EDUCATION  Education: Columbia University (1949), The Hill School, University of Virginia  Awards: Turing Award, Charles Stark Draper Prize, National Medal of Science for Mathematics and Computer Science

3 WHAT DID HE DO !  He directed the team that invented the first widely used high-level programming language (FORTRAN)  Inventor of the Backus-Naur form (BNF), a widely used notation to define formal language syntax.  He also did research in function-level programming and helped to popularize it.
