Algebraic Biology 2008 Opening Remarks by Bruno Buchberger, RISC, July 31, 2008

Welcome Thanks

Biology: Understand Bio Phenomena by Observation and Setting Up (Mathematical) Models Solve Bio Problems Mathematics: Understand Models by Reasoning Solve Model Problems by Methods (Algorithms)

Computer Mathematics: Discrete Models and Methods Numerical (Approximate) Models and Methods Algebraic Models and Methods Logic Models and Methods (Automated Reasoning)

Biology is interested in solving problems by whatever methods. Computer mathematics is interested in developing methods for whatever problem. The two interests are “orthogonal” and, therefore, do not always meet easily. “Algebraic Biology”: attempt to meet, interact, …  solve “algebraic”: emphasis on discrete, “hybrid numeric” algebraic, logic

The Program of Algebraic Biology 2008: –Contributed papers and invited papers: successful examples of interactions between bio and “algebra” –Tutorials: explain biology problems for mathematicians explain mathematical methods for biologists –Short communications: ideas in statu nascendi –Perspectives Meeting: where to go?

Enjoy !
