We meet Thursdays at 10:00 – 10:15 a.m. at St Marks Episcopal Church, 2024 South Collins Street (just north of Pioneer). Bring a couple of insulated containers (insulated bags are good). Also bring a map, since the route might of changed a little since the last time you were there. Our route is mostly east of the church, with the majority at an apartment complex at New York and Arkansas. This spirit of Rotary service has also expanded beyond local communities and Rotarians are seeing the world as their community. The Rotary theme for February is “World Understanding.” Members and clubs of our district are very active in living up to this ideal with a wide variety of activities and experiences. Involvement of Rotary teams in 2010-11 include: National Immunization Days in India and Nigeria, Ambassadorial scholars to Chile and Mexico, youth exchanges on multiple continents, disaster relief, humanitarian grants, friendship exchanges, Rotary Fellowships and much more. Recently I traveled with a Wichita Falls team to Haiti where we witnessed firsthand the earthquake devastation. While we were there we met with local Rotarians to discuss the potential for improving living conditions in many practical ways. Soon teams led by the Denton and Metroport clubs will be on the way to Nicaragua to continue their ongoing passion for relieving suffering and improving living conditions in that area. A team lead by Arlington will be making another visit to Honduras this spring to help improve water and sanitation for the people of Mosquitia where our efforts have been saving thousands of young children. In March and April our district will exchange Group Study Teams with New Zealand and you will be able to get to know them through club visits and at our District Conference. District Governer Paul Monthly Update Whether through the programs of the Rotary Foundation or individual World Community Service initiatives, Rotarians are continually finding ways to reach out and make a difference. This year has seen tremendous growth in number and size of INTERACT clubs in our district and much of it seems to be tied to the “International Baccalaureate Curriculum” in high schools. They have recognized that our Rotary goal of “World Understanding” is consistent with their mission of “promoting intercultural understanding and respect, not as an alternative to a sense of cultural and national identity, but as an essential part of life in the 21st century.” District and International events throughout the year are designed to help increase “World Understanding.” So, we hope that our district Rotarians will plan to take advantage of the these opportunities, which include the District Conference (May 6 & 7) celebrating the annual accomplishments of our clubs and the Rotary International Convention in New Orleans on May 21, which will also add a unique opportunity for an amazing international perspective.
